BERNARD MORNINGSTAR, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DOOR-PLATES AND LETTER-CHUTESi Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137 9 16, dated April 15, 1873; application filed February 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD MORNING- STAR, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Improved Combined Door-Plate and Letter-Chute, of which the followingis a specification:
This invention relates to that class of doorplates which are combined with and cover the lIlOllthOf a tube or chute inserted in a correspondin g aperture in the door for the conveyance of mail-matter and the like into a house or room through the closed door. My improvement consists in the employment of a sliding chute and a door-plate so connected thereto that to uncover the mouth of the chute both must be drawn outward a considerable distance before the plate can be lifted.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved door-plate. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, showing it attached to a door.
The same letters of reference are used in both figures in the designation of identical parts.
Upon the back of the door-plateA is formed an obliquely-projectin g plate, A having a downwardly-pointing flange, A at each end.
This plate A with its flanges fits snugly between the sides B of the chute B, and upon the extremities of the flanges A are hooks a,
tube, 0, fixed in an opening in the door, after which bars D are fastened to the door upon the insideone upon each side of the chute,
projecting respectively into slots b in the side flanges thereof. The slots are of just sufficient length to let the door'plate bring up against the face of the door, and to stop its outward movement and that of the chute before it is possible to detach the two upon the outside of the door. To lift the door-plate it is drawn out together with the chute as far as the slots 12 permit, when it can be swung on the pins 1) so as to expose the mouth of the chute.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-== The combination of the door-plate A A A A a a, chute B B B b b b b, tube 0, and bars D D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
B. MORNINGSTAR. Witnesses:
CARL HEROLD, ANDREW HUMBERT.
