GUSTAVE MOSHEIM AND ALBERT S. MOSHEIM, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY. I
POWDER-PUFF.
Application filed. June 29, 1920.
To all whom a may concern Be it known that we, GUsTAvE MosHnIM and ALBERT S. MosHniM, citizens of the United States, and residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder-Puffs, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to powder puffs and particularly to articles of this class known as one-faced puffs, or puffs composed ofa plurality of fibrous strands secured to a backing disk or sheet, and the object of this invention is to provide a puff of the class specified, the puff body of which is secured to a flexible backing disk. or sheetby an adhesive material, preferably rubber, towhich the separate strands of the puff body are set or secured thus producing a complete powder puff of the class specified, which is flexible in use and which may be cleaned whenever desired thus producing a sanitary powder puff a further object of the invention being to provide a suitable covering for the backing disk or sheet to improve the appearance thereof as well as to increase the durability of the article; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a powder puff of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and efficient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the complete powder puff made according to our invention;
Fig. 2 a transverse section on the line of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a slight modification; and,
Fig. 4 a View similar to Figs. 2 and 3 but showing another modification.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, we have indicated at 5 a puff body, preferably composed of a plurality of'strands of fibrous material such as cotton or wool Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24, .1921. Serial No. 392,671.
strands, and at 6 we have shown a flexible disk or sheet to which the puff body 5 is secured by adhesive material indicated at 7 in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The disk or sheet 6, inthe form of constructlon shown in Figs. .1 and 2 is provided with a fabriccovering 8, the periphery of which is turned inwardly upon the inner face of the disk or sheet6, as shown at9, and secured thereto prior to securing the pull body 5 to the disk or sheet6.
finger piece 10 is also providedwhich is, in the form of a loop or ring, and which is secured to the disk or sheet 6 by stitching, staples or otherwise 11, and washer 12 is preferably employed between the loop 10 and the fabric covering sheet 8 to reinforce and strengthen. the centralportion of the completed puff as will be apparent.
In securing the puff body 5 to the disk or sheet 6, the separate strands of the puff body are in a compressed state and the adhesive substance 7 is applied to one side face of the puff body when in its compressed state, after which it is placed upon the disk or sheet 6, after which the separate strands of the puff body 5 are allowed to expand'thus producingf a neat and finished appearance to the pn In the construction shown in Fig. 8, the fabric covering 8, or the periphery thereof, is not passed around and beneath the inner face of the disk or sheet 6, but merely forms a covering or facing for the outer face of the disk 6. It will be apparent that with this form of construction, the cost of manufacturing the complete puff will be somewhat reduced. It will also be seen that the washer 12 is not employed in the construction shown in Fig. 3, and it will therefore be apparent that this washer may or may not be employed.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the puff body 5 is secured to the backing disk or sheet 6 and the fabric covering 8 is omitted. When the complete puff is constructed in the manner shown in Fig. 4, the outer face of the disk or sheet 6 will be preferably colored or treated to give a neat finish as well as an attractive appearance. The finger piece, in the construction shown in Fig. 4, consists of a ribbon 13 formed into a loop which extends outwardly of the disk or sheet 6, and the free ends of the ribbon are passed inwardly through a central aperture in the disk 6 and extended laterally as shown at 14, and secured to the inner face of said disk, after which the puff body 5 is secured to said face of the diskin the usual manner.
In all the forms of construction shown, the disk orsheet' 6 is preferably composed of a flexible material but of sufiicient rigidity as to hold the puff normally in proper form and yet permitof the bending, folding or twisting of the complete article without injury thereto. We are well aware of the fact that one-faced powder .pufls are not broadly new in the art, but in this case we have produced a powder puff which is so constructed as tobe flexible, sanitary, and strong and durable in use and by providing a suitable covering of fibrous material for the disk or sheet we also improve the appearance and attractiveness of'the article, and while we have shown certain details of construction for carrying our invention into effect, it will be apparent that we are not necessarily limited to these details, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages. Havmg fully .descrlbed our lnvention,
what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y 1. A powder puff of the class described comprising a puff body composed of a plurality of fabric strands, a backing member composed of flexible material, a fabric covering for one side face of said backing member, the periphery of said covering extending around the periphery of said member and secured to the other side face thereof, and said puff body being secured to the last named side face of said backing member by adhesive material.
2. A powder puff of the class described comprising apuif body composed of a plurality of fibrous strands, and a backing member composed of flexible material and to one side face of which the separate fibrous strands of said puff body are secured by adhesivematerial having flexible qualities.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 28th day of June, 1920.
