Description
F. AND G. LANTIERI.
HAIR WAVING TUBE.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 6, I919.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAIR-WAVING TUBE.
Application filed December 6, 1919.
To all whom it may concern proved tube designed for use in what is known as permanent hair waving, in the carrying out of which a tress of hair coiled about a thin rod or tube is covered with an absorbent material impregnated with a hair treating solution, and the whole inclosed in a protecting tube adapted to be inserted in the cylindrically formed bore of an electric heater.
It has been a common expedient to moisten the end of a pasteboard tube located adjacent the head, and then tie the same tightly about the tress of hair in proximity to the head, whereby the heated gases will be confined and prevented from being projected through the end of the tube adjacent the head, against the scalp of the subject.
This way of inclosing the inner end of the tube is objectionable in that the spring or twine employed sometimes slips off, and moreover, it is difficult to contract or puoker the end of the tube so that a tight closure is effected.
The object of the present invention is to provide a tube which will eliminate the objection above pointed out and to provide a structure wherein the inner end of the tube may be tightly closed by a simple operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a structure wherein the tube and the twine employed for closing the end thereof are provided in a unitary structure whereby the tubes are always ready for instant use.
Other objects and aims of the invention more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
Inthe accompanying drawing, wherein Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24, 1921.
Serial No. 343,000.
we have illustrated a preferred form of embodiment of our invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing our improved tube. 4
Fig. 2 is a view of part of the tube in elevation, partly broken away, better to illustrate the construction.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the inner end of the tube; and
Fig. 4 is a view showing that end contracted.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the views thereof, the reference numeral 1 indicates a cylindrical form of pasteboard, or similar rnaterial. The reference numeral 2 illustrates a strip of fabric, which is fastened to one end of the tube, as by cementing the same interiorly and exteriorly thereof, or by otherwise fastening the tube and strip together. It will be understood that if cement is used a material will be employed which will not be easily disintegrated or softened by the application of heat.
The folded end of the strip 3 projects from the inner end of the tube, forming a pocket 4, in which is provided a string or cord 5, a space 6 being provided between the adjacent edges 7 and 8 of said strip, adapted to accommodate the knot 9, which is formed in the cord or twine and to permit the edges 7 and 8 to approach each other when the knot 9 is tightened, as indicated in Fig. 4.
' This construction permits the closing of the inner end of the tube without moistening the latter, and moreover, provides for such a closure of the inner end that the exit of heated gases is effectively prevented.
It will accordingly be seen that we have provided a structure well adapted to attain, among others, all the ends and objects above pointed out, in an exceedingly simple manner, and providing a structure which is always ready for instant use.
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a tubular member having a strip of fabric fastened to the exterior and interior surfaces of said tubular member forming a' folded portion adjacent the end of'said tubular member, and means located in the folded portion of said strip of fabric adapted to draw said folded portion together, thereby contracting the end of said tubular member so as to close the latter.
2. In a device of the class described, in combination, a tubular member having a strip of fabric fastened thereto at one end,
said strip being passed only partly about said tubular member so as to provide a space between the adjacent edges of the strip, and said strip of fabric having a 20 pocket therein adjacent the end of said tubular member, and a draw-string located in said pocket adapted to be tied so that the knot will be located in said space.
In testimony whereof, we afiix our signa- 25 tures in the presence of two witnesses.
