IMPROVEMENT m AUTOMATIC FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 13%,?85, dated April 15, 1373 3 application filed September 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAMILTON T. MoOoR- MICK, of Selma, in the county of Dallas and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Automatic Fans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a detail view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 3is a longitudinal section of my invention.
My invention has relation to automatic fans;
and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described, whereby the fan can be raised or lowered at will, and the operating-power economized.
A of the drawing represents a frame or standard, to which is attached clock-work R, or other suitable motor for actuating the fan. B represents an elbowlever having a slotted arm, as shown at a, by which it is connected with the operatingcrank upon the motor. This lever usually rests upon supporting-bars O, in suitable eyelets made for that purpose, and as set forth in the drawing. The letters D represent pendent and slotted arms, attached to a frame or to the ceiling of a room, as the case may require, and in the slots of which the cross-bar E that sustains the fan F may be raised or lowered at will, thereby perforated, as shown, to aid further in making said adjustment. G represents an extension of the handle or shank of the fan, which passes loosely through an aperture in the lever B. H represents a notched standard or ratchet bar, arranged in the manner shown on Fig. 2, and is intended to hold the lever I, next mentioned, in the desired position. I represents a lever, which is pivoted to a frame, K, and is connected at its front end with the lifting bars or frame N, as shown. The lifting-frame N is connected at its lower end to the cross-bar E, and at its upper end to the lever I.
In adjusting the position of the fan, the op erator raises or lowers the rear end of lever I, and makes it secure in the proper notch of the ratchet-bar H.
It is apparent that this lever I can be operated by means of a rope or chain, whenever it is found desirable so to do or weights may be used therewith to advantage.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In an automatic fan the combination of the operating motor with the elbow-lever B, pendcut-arms D, lifting-frame N, cross-bar E, lever I, and ratchet-bar H, constructed and arranged to actuate a fan, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
. H. T. MCCORMICK.
