Description
W. L. WILLS.
GATES.
No. 195,864. Patented Oct.2,1877
' v 4/ Y W a ATTORNEYS N. PETERS. PHOTD-L|THOGRI\PHER WASHINGTONv D C.
PATENT Q'FFICE.
WILLIAM L. WILLS, OF BIG LICK, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,864, dated October 2, 1877; application filed August 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. L. WILLs, of Big Lick, in the county of Roanoke, and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to gates; and it consists in the construction of the gate-hinges, and in the combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a front elevation of a gate embodying my invention.
The gate is constructed, in the ordinary manner, of horizontal boards A, connected at the ends and in the center by vertical bars B B. O is the post to which the gate is hung.
D D are the hinges bywhich the gate is himg to hooks to a, fastened in said post C. These hinges are firmly secured to the vertical bar B at the inner end of the gate, and from said bar the hinges extend inward and toward each other, and are riveted together at b, an arm, D extending, however, from the end of the upper hinge beyond said connection. This arm D extends under a perforated regulatingbar, G, which is attached to the gate, and from said arm extends a pin, .20, through either one of the holes in the bar G.
In place of such regulating-bar, a ratchetbar may be used, if desired.
The inner vertical bar B of the gate is stationary on the hinges D D, and the horizontal boards A are each pivoted at w to said vertical bar B. The bars B B in the middle and at the outer end of the gate are pivoted to the horizontal boards A.
The gate can by these means be raised or lowered, as required, at its outer end, and held firmly at any angle by the pin 00 entering one of the perforations in the bar G. The hinges thus answer the threefold purpose of hanging, bracing, and regulating the position of the gate.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a gate, the hinges D D, connected at their inner ends, and forming a projecting arm or lever, D for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the post 0 with hooks a. a, the gate AB, connected hinges D D with arm D having pin 00 and the perforated bar Gr, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of July, 1877.
WILLIAM L. WILLS.
