B. H. .GROOKER. Device for Converting Motion.
No. 231,955. Paten'ted Sept. 7, I880.

IELHANAN H. OROOKER, OF SANDY HILL, NEW YORK.
DEVICE FOR CONVERTING MOT|ON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,955, dated September 7,1880. Application filed July 21, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. H. CROOKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandy Hill, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Converting Motion; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device for convertin g motion adapted to operate machinery from the story above, to govern dampers and drafts in furnaces, shift belts, turn cocks, register quantities or charges, and the like from a distance; and thenovelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In carrying out my invention I employ an elbow, which is pivoted at about the junction of the two arms to a stud, post, or standard, each arm carrying a pivoted socket, the one being vertical and carrying an operating-rod which extends up through the floor of the story above and has upon its end a basket to receive adjusting-weights. The other socket has connected to it a horizontal rod having upon its extremity a jaw or other device ad apted for the work to be performed. A pulley above the elbow carries a rope or cord, one end of which is secured to the upper arm of elbow, and the other has secured to it a weight, which will exert a constant tendency to hold the elbow in the position shown in Fig. 1. Weights upon the operating-rod will hold the device in any desired positionpor the weights in the basket may be dispensed with, and the suspended weight may be of j 11st sufficient gravity to overcome the gravity of the operating-rod, and in such case the device will remain in any placed position.
The device is peculiarly adapted for efficient service upon furnaces, enabling the operator from the story above to govern the blast at will, as the register or damper is opened, closed, or partly opened by the operating-rod.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a side view.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the stud or post of a building, and B the floorbeams of the story above.
Pivoted at 0 upon the post A is an elbowlever, O, carrying upon its horizontal arm a pivoted socket, e, which receives an operatingrod, E, which extends up through the floor above and carries upon its upper end a weightbasket, E.
Upon the vertical arm of the elbow-lever O is a socket, d, loosely secured, and carrying a horizontal rod, D, for attachment to the device to be operated.
F represents a frame, secured to the post A at a proper distance above the elbow 0, (shown at f,) and F represents a pulley journaled in said frame. A rope, G, is secured to the socket e at one end, passed over the pulley F, and has upon the other end a suspended weight, G.
From this description the operation and usefulness of the device are obvious.
What I claim as new is 1. A device for converting motion, consisting of an operating-rod, an elbow-lever, and a connecting-bar, with loose connections, and with the gravity of the operating-bar overcome by a suspended weight, as set forth.
2. The device for converting motion herein described, consisting of the pivoted elbow-lever -O c, the sockets 0 cl, the operating-rod E E, the
connecting horizontal bar D, the pulley F F, rope G, and Weight G, all combined, arranged, and adapted to serve as herein set forth, for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
