Description
1. J. TOKHEIM' BOTTLE CAPPER. APPLICATION FILED Aue.2s. 1919.
- Patented May 3,1921.
warren stares JOHN J. TOKI-IEIM, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
BOTTLE-CAPPER.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1921.
Application filed August 28, 1919. $eria1 No. 320,408.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. ToKHEiM, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Bottle-flapper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for use in placing metal caps on bottles, one of its objects being to provide a simple, compact and efiicient device of this character which can be operated readily-and which has means for firmly gripping the neck of the bottle while the cap is being forced to position.
Another object is to provide a device of the class mentioned which is formed of few parts and will not readily get out of order.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the capper in use, one of the handles being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Referring to the figures by characters oi? reference, 1 designates a cup like die adapted to receive a metal or crown cap and to force it upon and shape it around the flanged mouth portion a of a bottle neck A. This die is of the usual construction. It has ears 2 upstanding therefrom and pivotally connected to these cars is the middle port-inn of the tension yoke To the ends 0t this yoke are pivotally connected levers i having long arms 5 constituting handles and short arms 6 to which are pivotally connected neck gripping aws 7 In using the device a cap is placed on the neck of the bottle and the levers 4- are swung so as to move the aws 7 apart and permit them to be placed at opposite sides of the bottle neck. The long arms of both levers are then thrust downwardy and will cause the aws 7 to firmly embrace the bottle neck and to come together as shown. The die 1 will be pulled downwardly by the levers drawing on the yoke and will engage and shape the cap so as to bind it on the bottle neck. During the foregoing action the points of connection between the yoke 3 and the levers 4: will move downwardly past the dead centers so that the parts will be held firmly assembled until the levers 4 are pulled 2. A capper including opposed levers,
gripping aws pivotally connected thereto, a spring yoke connected at its 7 ends to the levers, and a capper head pivotally connected to the yoke, said levers being movable to carry the points of connection between the levers and yoke downwardly past their (lead centers to lower and" hold the capping head in act1ve positlon.
3. A. capper including opposed jaws, a
tension yoke, a lever connection between each end of the yoke and one of the jaws,
and a cappcr head carried by the yoke, said yoke constituting tension means for bold ing the jaws together until the capper head is lifted off of an engaged bottle cap.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. TOKHEIM.
Witnesses;
IRMA L. KING, LUGILLE BURKE.
