CHARLES REED RAGSDALE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Six-STREAM DISTRIBUTING ATTACHMEl-TT FOR SODA-WATER DRAFT-ARIS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 1921.
Application filed March 6, 1919. Serial No. 280,918
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Reno K-Aos- DALE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and Im proved Six Stream Distributing Attach ment for Soda-Water Draft-Arms, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to soda water fountains, and particularly to the draft .arm through which the soda water is drawn.
The general object of my invention is to provide an attachment to be applied to the draft arm in lieu of the usual hard rubber nozzle found thereon and whereby to produce speedy service, the attachment providing a plurality of distributing members provided with nozzles and preferably three in number and set in triangular relation so as to permit of the operator filling either one, two, or three glasses at a time as will be clearly u derstood from the descrlption hereinaft given. The attachment includes means to draw therefrom both the plural coarse streams through the attachment or plural fine streams or sprays all by the usual operation of the ordinary controlling handle of the draft arm and an important object of the invention is to provide the attachment in a form whereby upon screwing the fitting onto the draft arm in lieu of the usual rubber nozzle a connection will at the same time be automatically effected between the fine stream pipe of the attachment and the fixed fine stream pipe of the draft arm, the last-mentioned object being attained by the provision of a special fine-stream tip to be substituted on the draft arm for the usual fine spray tip.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a draft arm having my improved attachment applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section thereof;
Figs. 3, t and 5 are dia rammatic views indicating the manner of fiTling two glasses, three glasses, or one glass through the medium of my attachment;
Fig. 6 is a detail vertical section of the special spray tip provided to establish connection between the fine spray pipe of the attachment and the fixed fine spray pipe of .the usual draft arm.
In'carrying out my invention a fitting is 1 provided presenting a neck 10 havin threads 11 thereon to enga e the usufi threads on the draft arm A o a soda water fountain, the threaded connection being external or internal according to the particular arran ement of the threads on the draft arm A. manating from the neck 10 and in communication therewith is a plurality of pendent distributing members 12 each provided with its individual nozzle 13. It is to be understood that the fitting takes the place of the usual nozzle found on the draft arm A and held to the latter by the threads thereon which with my invention are engaged by the threads 11. When the fitting is in position on the draft arm A the distributing members 12 will be in communication through the neck 10 with theusual passages provided in the draft arm for the coarse stream or full flow of soda water. The usual draft arm has a fine spray pipe at fixed thereon through which in the usual construction a fine spray is directed to the glass to be filled and aerated. A fine spray pipe 14 is provided extending within the neck 10 and presenting a plurality of distributing members 18 corresponding with the members 12. The. pipe is considerably smaller than the neck 10 to be spaced therefrom, so that the full flow of soda water to the distributing members 12 may pass about the pipe 14. Similarly, the distributing branches 18 from the pipe 14 are spaced from the members 12. With my invention, connection is effected between the fine spray pipe 14 and the nipple or threaded end of the fixed spray pipe a through the medium of a novel spray tip 15 which is secured to the pipe 05 in lieu of the usual spray tip. Said tip .15 has threads 16 to engage the threads on the fixed pipe as and its lower end 17 is threaded to receive corresponding threads on the upper end of the spray pipe 14:. The proportions and relative positions of the tip 15 and pipe 14 with respect to the neck 10 and its threads 11 are such that the screwing of the neck 10 into place on the draft arm automatically effects a connection of the pipe 14.- with the tip 15 and therefore with the fixed fine spray pipe a.
In the present instance the pipe 14 is centered by a rigid spider 19, and spiders 20 are provided to center the distributing branches 18 in the members 12. With the direction the full stream of soda water will flow through the neck 10 and members 12 while when the handle is swung in the opposite direction as in the usual manner a fine spray will issue from the pipe a and the pipe 14 with its branches 18. In Fig. 3 I have shown two glasses being filled and this is permitted by the triangular relation of the members 12 and 18, whereby two of the nozzles will direct the streams to one glass B while the third nozzle directs the streams to the second glass B. In Fig. 4 three glasses are shown arranged'to receive the respective streams While in Fig. 5 the three nozzles are arranged to direct the streams to a single glass.
Itwill be clear from the foregoing that the service of dispensing soda water may be greatly speeded up by the filling simultaneously of a plurality of glasses by a single movement of the controlling handle of the draft arm.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical draft arm having independent coarse and fine stream connections; of a fitting having a neck provided with a plurality of branches, a fine spray pipe axially within the neck and having a series of branches leading into and through the first named branches to the nozzles thereof, and means for effecting the I connection of the fine spray pipe with the fine stream connection upon theattaohment of the neck with the coarse stream connection.
2. The combination with a soda water draft arm having independent coarse and fine stream connections, and means for con trolling the same; of a fitting having a neck provided with a plurality of branches" arranged concentric to a'common center and provided with detachable nozzles, a fine spray pipe axially within the neck and provided with branches, one of which leads into and through each branch of the fitting and terminates at the nozzle thereof, and means for effecting a detachable connection of the neck of the fitting with the coarse stream connection, and simultaneously effecting a connection of the fine spray pipe with the fine stream connection.
3. The combination with a soda water draft arm and a controlling handle for the same, said draft arm having independent coarse and fine stream connections; of a fitting having a neck threadedly engaged with the arm and provided with a plurality of branches curved outwardly and downwardly therefrom, said branches being three in number, and arranged equi-distant from a common center, a fine spray pipe coaxial with the neck and having a series of distributing members leading axially through the branches, means for threadedly connecting the fine spray pipe with the fine stream connection when the neck is connected to the coarse stream connection of the arm, a spider within the neck and receiving the fine spray pipe therethrough, and spiders in the branches receiving the distributing members therethrough.
