H. YOUNG MULTIGOLOR ATTACHMENT FOR SPRAY GUNS Filed June 16, 1930 INVENTOR. HARVEY L. YOU/Y6 BY mow/WW6 A TTORNEYS.
Patented June 21, 1932 UNITED STATES HARVEY L. YOUNG, OF PACIFIC GROVE, CALIFORNIA MULTICOLOR ATTACHMENT FOR SPRAY GUNS Application filed .l'une 16,
My invention relates to improvements in multi-color attachments for spray guns, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a multi-color attachment for' spray guns which may be quickly attached to a standard spray gun in the same manner as a single container of material is now attached. A plurality of receptacles are used, and these are all connected to a common outlet pipe that communicates with the passageway in the spray gun. Eachreceptacle is placed in communication with the spray gun by means of a manually controlled valve, and all of these valves or any one of them may be opened so as to vary the kind of liquid that is emitted by the spray gun.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which is extremely simple in construction and which is durable andeificient for the purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds, and the novel features will be particularly pointed out in the claims hereto annexed.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device shown operatively applied to a spray gun, and
Figure 2 shows a vertical section through e device, portions being shown in elevation.
. n carrying out my invention I make use of a standard spray gun 1 having an inlet pipe 2 for fluid and a nozzle 3 of standard construction.
My device is removably secured to the pipe 2 by a nut 4 (see Figure 2), and this nut removably secures a common dischargev pipe 5 to the pipe 2. The pipe 5 has a plurality of branch pipes 6. I have shown four branch pipes in the present drawing, although this number may be changed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
A housing 7 encloses a portion of the branch pipes 6 and a portion of the main pipe 5. A valve 8 is provided for each branch 1930. Serial No. 461,465.
pipe 6,'and the valves are enclosed in a housing 7. The housing has openings 9 through which valve handles 10 project.
A casting 11 is shaped into four cover members, and these members have the branch to pipes 6 projecting therethrough. The casing 11 may be secured to the housing 7 or to the pipes 6 or to both. Liquid containers 12 are removably secured in the four covers of the casting 11, and may be threaded into the casting as at 13 or be secured by other suitable means. I preferably dispose a different colored liquid or a different kind of liquid in each of the four containers 12.
From the foregoing description of the vari- 05 ous parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.
The gun is used in the ordinary manner, and is connected to an air hose not shown. The operator by opening any .one of the four valves 8 by means of their handles 10, can cause the gun to deliver a fluid from any one of the containers 12 desired. Furthermore, two or more valves 8 maybe opened, and the openings maybe large or small so as to deliver the desired quantity of fluid from one or more of the containers 12. In this way various mixtures of color can be sprayed upon the surface at one time. This saves the operator time in changing from one jar of color to a second jar of color, as is now the practice. In addition to this, the operator is able to produce a most beautiful mottled, blended and Tiffany effect on wall decorations, furniture,
etc., which is not possible where only one 001- ored jar is used at a time. I
The use of two or more colors at the same time in the proportion desired will cause these colors to blend while they are still wet. The device can be used for paint, lacquer, or a like material.
Although I have'shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of various changes, and I reserve the right to employ such changes as may come within the scope of the claims hereto annexed.
I claim 1. The combination with a spray gun hav ing a fluid inlet pipe, of an attachment re- 2 asagna movably secured to said pipe and comprising a plurality of 11 uid containers, conduits placing the liquid m'each container in communication with said pi e, and an independent valve for each conduit allowing the liquid to be discharged therethrough after being opened until the same is manually closed whereby the liquid can be independently and selectively discharged from each container or in various combinations.
2. A spray gun attachment comprising a common outlet pipe, a plurality of containers, a conduit leading from each container to the pipe, and an independent valve for each conduit allowing the liquid to be discharged therethrough after being opened until the same is manuall closed whereby the liquid can be indepe ently and selectively discharged from each container or in various combinations.
3. A spray gun attachment comprising a housing, a common pipe carried by the housing, containers independently removable for refilling secured to the housing, branch pipes leading from the common pipe-and terminating in the containers, and valves for the branch pipes allowing the liquid to be discharged therethrough after being opened until. the same is manually closed whereby the liquid can be independently and selectively discharged from each container or in various combinations.
4. A spray gun attachment comprising a member in the shape of covers, containers removably attached to the covers in the disposition of a circular cluster, a common discharge conduit having branches extending into each of the containers, and an independent valve in. each branch allowing liquid to be discharged therethrough after being opened until the same is manually closed.
Signed at Pacific Grove in the county of Monterey and State of California this 31st day of May, A. D. 1930.
