To all whom it may concern.-
lie it known that 1, RAYMOND Pnnsoorr Vina, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented anew i To those familiar with the art of molding the making of cores as a part of the mold is not new, but the difficulties and drawbacks of the present method of forming such cores are well known.
These difliculties are due to the molds being made in two or more parts and the shifting'of these parts during their removal from the pattern and plate, frequently making the core defective either from failure to draw it clear from the pattern or to adhere to the mold proper after having been withdrawn from the pattern. Lack of proper means of compressing the sand in the core also frequently results in cutting or crushing of the core by the molten metal, thus rendering the entire casting defective.
The object of this invention is to provide means whereby sand cores can be formed for producing holes in castings, simple and efficient means being utilized whereby the cores are left intact and uninjured by the removal of the mold from the pattern. A still further object is to provide means whereby, in a single mold, cores may be formed for producing openings extending at angles to each other, as in the formation of plow points and the like.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appearas the description proceeds, the invention embraces certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter-more fully described and pointed out in the claims,

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a table adapted to supporta pattern 2 andthe ,fiask 3 of a mold. An opening a is provided in the table and matches an opening 5 in the pattern 2,

Slidably mounted in the openings 5 and 4 and upon the pin 9 is a sleeve 16 the upper portion of which constitutes a pattern for a core to be formed by the sand packed within the flask, The lower portion of the sleeve 7 Sand is packed about the pattern in the.

Lever is then operated so asto cause lever 10 topress the pin 9 upwardly within the sleeve and further compress the sand above the pin. While the sand in the sleeve is thus held under compression by the pin the lever is actuated to cause the lever 18 to pull through link 19 upon the sleeve 16 and draw it downwardly along pin 7 and out of the pattern. The core is thereby left intact as the sleeve is drawn from engagement therewith and the flask can be removed, and the casting operation proceeded with. It will be'apparent that a number of pins and sleeves can be coupled to one set of levers so that a number of cores can thus be formed simultaneously. Such a duplication 01" parts is so obvious that a detailed description or illustration thereof is not deemed necessary.
In Figs. 5 and I has been shown an apparatus for forming a plow point. In this modified structure movable pins are not employed. A bracket 22 is secured under and across the peaked portion ofa table 23 and 1 *has pins 24; extending at angles therefrom and into openings 25 in the table. The pattern 26 with openings 27 therein is arranged on the table andwithin the flasks 28 and sleeves 29 are slidably mounted on the pins and project into the opening 27. Each sleeve has an sin: 30 extending therefrom and lapping the bracket 22 so as tohold the v sleeveagainst rotation. Levers 31. are pivotally connected to opposite sides of the bracket and one of the levers is connected to one of the sleeves by a link 32 while the 7 other lever is connected by a link 52 to the other sleeve. Anarm 33 is connected to the levers and by shifting "this arm the two. levers are actuated so as to raise or lower the. sleeves on the pins 24 thus toset the and a pattern, of a sleeve member slidably mounted in the pattern and its supporting structure and constituting a core pattern, and means for withdrawing said sleeve member fromthe pattern and away from the formed core therein, prior to the removal of the mold from the pattern.

In a core formin device the combination with a structure ior supporting a flask and a pattern, said structure and pattern having registering openings, of a sleeve mounted in the openings and constituting a core pattern, a pin extending into the sleeve and constituting a core support, and means for shifting the sleeve along the pin to withdraw the sleeve from engagement withthe supported core.
