J. SKATTEBOE APPARATUS FOR AND METHOD OF PRODUCING CAST METAL CHAINS Filed June 5} 1920 4 Sheets-Sheet 3 Aug. 18, 1925.
J. SKATTEBQE APPARATUS FOR AND METHOD OF PRODUCING CAST METAL CHAINS 4 Sheets-She 4 Filed June 5, 1920 upon the box is pressed byrotation of the lever 11 into the position shown in Fig. 3.
The mold box is thus only pressed by the.
platens while simultaneously the sand dur ing the pressing is cut through by the plates 27. Thereafter the platen 12 together with the vertical chain link patterns 13 and 14, is raised by means of the lever 15 after the nuts 18 have been loosened and the cotter pins 24 removed. The vertical chain link patterns 13, 14 are withdrawn vertically from the platen 3. The platen 12 havlng been raised to the required extent the mold box may then be removed in the'usual manner. The plates 27 are removed, whereby the box has been subdivided into three parts .19 and 20. v I
, The single links 22 which are arranged between the'upper and lower halves of the box are previously cast chain links, introduced in cold condition, they having been formed in identical manner with the exception that the plates 27 are not arranged in position, because it is not necessary to employ sectionalized boxes for the casting of the single links 22.
After a large number of sectionalized boxes havebeen pressed and dried they are assembled in continuous lengths of about 28 meters in the following manner :'At first thetwo parts 19 are assembled (Fig. 6); thereupon the first cast links 22, then the parts 20, thereupon again the links 22, and finally the two latter mold parts 19 are introduced (Fig. 5). Each form box a is thus composed of six parts; the members indicated by the dotted lines are cast through the inlet channel 28, while the other links 22 are introduced cold.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that whatI claim is 1. In a machine for making sand'molds for use in the continuous casting of chains, a lower platen, adapted for the arrangement of horizontal chain link patterns thereon, an upper platen, means for raising and lower ing said platens at will, means to secure the upper platen against vertical movement, a mold box comprising separable sections having opposed open sides between which vertical chain link patterns may be arranged, and means operative when the platens are moved toward each other, to cut through the sand ,in the mold box at pointscoincident with the opposed open sidesof the sections thereof, to separate the molds.
In a machine for making sand molds for use in the continuous casting of chains, a lower platen, adaptedfm the arrangement of horizontal chain link patterns thereon, an upper-plate'm'means for raising and loweringsaidplatens at will, means to secure the upper platen againstvertical-movement, a. mold box comprising separable sections having opposed open sides between which vertical chain link patterns. maybe arranged, and means operative when the platens are moved toward each other, to out through the sand in the mold box at points the upper platen against Vertical movement,
a :mold box comprising separable sections having opposed open sides between which vertical chain link patterns may bear ranged, and means, operative by the move ment' of one of the platens when the platens are moved toward each other, to cut through the sand in the mold box at point-scoincident with the opposed opensides of the sections thereof, to separate the molds.
4. Ina machine for'making sand molds for use in the continuouscasting of chains, a lower platen, adapted for the arrangement of horizontal chain link pattern-s thereon, an upper platen mounted for vertical movement and also for swinging lateral movement, means for raising and lowering said platens at will, means to secure the upper platen against vertical-movement, a mold box comprising separable sections having opposed open sides between which. vertical" chain link patterns maybe arranged, and means, operative when the platens are moved toward each other, to'cut through the sand in the mold box at points .coinci- 'dent' withthe opposedopen sides of the sec tions thereof, to separate the molds The process of making sand molds for use in the continuous casting of ,chains, consisting in placing horizontal chain link pat.- terns at the bottom of a mold box,'and.forming sand molds in sections in the box, separable on vertical lines and arranged in their opposing sides for the receptlon of vertical chain link patterns. 7
The process of making sand molds for Y use in the continuous casting of chains, con sisting in placing horizontal chain link pat terns at the bottom of a mold box, and forming said molds inqsections inthe box,
separable on vertical lines and arrangedin their opposing ,sides for the reception. of vertical chain link patterns, andfinally, separating said sectionalmolds on said-lines;
In testimony whereof. I afixmy signature.
