ROBERT C. MLL OF MAYWORTH, NORTH CAROLINA.
CHAIN WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar.l 29, ilQJZil.
Application led September 13, 1920. Serial No. $09,788.
Mayworth, in the county of Gaston and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Chain Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to a wrench, and more especially to the class of chain wrenches.
rlhe primary obj ect of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, wherein pipes, rods or the like of various sizes can be tion thereto, and after adjustment of the same upon the pipe, rod or the like, .thus enabling the handling 4of the work expeditiously and without excessive labor on the` part of the user of the wrench.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, wherein the gripping chain is mounted and adjusted in the jaw end of said wrench in a novel manner and said jaw end is of a formation to assure positive gripping action upon the work.
A 4further object o-f the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, wherein maximum leverage can be had when the wrench is engaged with the work, without the` possibility of the said wrenchV slipping and a maximum range of adjustment is assured so that the wrench is adaptable for` large or smallwork, the gripping chain being readily and quickly adjustable to accommodate the work in the wrench.
A still further object of the invention-is the provision of a wrench of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, possessing but few parts, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong yet `comparatively light in weight, durable, and inex ensive to manufacture.
ith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing,
firmly gripped and turned.- in either direction, without necessitating the remounting of the wrench in working rela.
and pointed out vin the claims hereunto appended.
ln the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 isa fragmentary top plan view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention shown applied to a pipe.
Flg. 2 is an edge elevation, showing the wrench at the jaw end thereof partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing in detail the latch cam or locking member.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing:
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portion of a pipe section, which is merely shown to illustrate the application of the chain wrench constituting the present invention and hereinafter fully described.
rlhe chain wrench comprises ahandle or lever portion 5, which may be of any desirable length and can be constructedl from any Suitable material, preferably metal, one endbeing enlarged to constitute a head 6, which in this instance is of irregular or substantially diamond shape for the major portion thereof and this portion is formed by reducing the width of the head 6 to provide-.an intermediate web 7 between a pair of stationary jaws 8, the same being identical to each other and are mounted on opposite sides ofthe web 7. rllhe jaws 8 are preferably riveted to the web 7, yet the same may be otherwise fastened, if found desirable.
The free or outer ends of the jaws 8 are concaved and have formed thereon on opposite sides of the center of the same, reversely set gripping teeth 9 adapted to bite into a piece of work when the wrench is engaged therewith to avoid any possibility of the slipping of the said jaws 8 upon the same.
IThe particular shape of the .web 7 provides between the jaws 8 wa s l0 and 11 respectively for accommodating the end portion of a exible link gripping chain. 12, the terminal link 13' of sald chain being engaged and secured in the way 10 by a pivot pin 14.- and the link next to said terminal link 13 of the chain is trained over a Vguide pin 15 at the inner side thereof, which pin 15 is readily removable it found desirable and is carried in the jaws 8.
The intermediate portion of the chain 12 is adapted to be trained over and about a piece oi work, for example, in the manner as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of `the drawing relative to the pipe A shown therein. The other end portion of the chain is adjustably passed through the way 11 and is adapted to be seated in a concavity- 16 formed in the ,edge of the web 7 and this end portion of the chain is adapted tio-be locked in a manner presently described.
Formed in the jaws 8 and intersecting the way 11 are corresponding inclined slots 17 which are inclined forwardly and accommodate the pivot or axle 18 of a locking eccentric or cam 19 having a lever or arm 20, the pivot or axle 18 being readily slidable in the slots 17 forbringing the cam 19 closely to or away from the end portion of the chain 12 passed through the way 11 and on the turning of said cam 19 by the lever 20 in one direction the end portion of the chain will be firmly secured or held tast in the way 11 and in this manner the jaws 8 and the gripping chain 12 are brought into gripping relation to the ieee of work as for example the pipe A. as s own in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
By arcuately moving the handle 5 of the jaw in either direction the piece of work or pipe A can be readily turned by the wrench without any liability of the slipping of the work or the wrench relative to each other.
When it is desired to slacken the chain 12 or loosen the same about the piece of work, the lever 2O isi thrown in a direction to disJ engage the cam 19 from the end portion of sald chain passed through the way 11 between the jaws 8 of the wrench and when required the said'chain can be released f rom the work. lt is clearly apparent that plpes, rods or the like ot variable sizes can" be engaged by the wrench and turned in either direction as the occasion may require, without possibility of lost motion or the slipping ot' the chain or piece of work when the wrench is active.
Now in event that the gripping teeth 9 on-the jaws 8 should become worn or mutilated to be inedective the outer knife edge end 21 of the web l will then become active or secured inmate upon a piece of work to prevent the possibility of the slipping of the jaws 8 when the wrench is engaged therewith.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the wrench will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted. llt is contemplated to make changes, variations and modifications in the invention as come properly within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrifie.- ing any of its advantages.
What is claimed is:
1. A wrench of the character described, comprising a head havingspaced jaws provided with a seat formed with reversely disposed biting teeth, and also having ways, a chain having one end fixed to one way and its other end slidably passed throu h the other way, the last mentioned way aving a convex inner wall, and a hand operable member in the head for engaging the last named end of the chain to adjustably clamp the latter against said concave inner wall.
2. A wrench of the character described, comprising a head having spaced jaws provided With a seat formed with reversely disposed biting teeth, and also having ways, a chain having one end fixed to one way and its other end ,slidably passed through the other way, a hand operable' member in the head for enga 'nglthe last named end of the chain to adjustably fasten the same, a guide pin arranged to maintain the iixed end of the chainin its way, and a cam on said member to coact with the chain.
3. A wrench of the character described, comprising a head having spaced jaws provided with a seat formed with reversely disposed biting teeth, and also having ways, a chain having one end fixed to one way and its other end slidably passed through the other way, a hand operable member in the head for engaging the last named end of the chain to adjustably fasten the same, and a cam on said member to' coact with the chain, said jaws being provided with nclined guide slots for the member, to'bring the latter to and from the path'of the chain.
ln testimony whereof, l ax my signature hereto.`
