IMPROVEMENT IN STENCiL-PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,317, dated April 1, 1873; application filed January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANK L. MORRISON, of New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Stencil-Brand; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to plates through which letters Or figures are cut, for marking boxes, bales, and other articles, called stencil-brandsy7 and it consists in arranging the letters of the alphabet, Or the figures, in a row, one above another, on a narrow strip or band, which is bent around in the form of a hoop, with one edge fastened to a light circular frame or wheel, which is provided with a suitable handle in the center for holding and turning the same; also, a sliding shield is attached tO the lettered band, whereby the letters and figures may be branded one at a time.
The drawing represents a perspective view of my improved stencil-brand.
a is the fra-me, which is a thin dat ring of suitable metal, with spokes Or cross-pieces fastened to it by rivets or otherwise. Z is the handle, which is secured in suit-able manner tO the frame. c is the lettered band, which is made of brass, copper, Or other suitable material, with the letters of the alphabet Or the figures cut through it in a row, one above another, and the left-hand edge crimped or otherwise fastened around the circular frame a, the surface Of the lettered band or hoop being at Or near a right angle to the side Or face of the circular frame. On the right-hand edge of the band a small bead is formed by crimping Or Otherwise, on which the shield slides. d is the shield, which is a thin piece of metal, with a space cut out of one side, and the Opposite side crimped around the bead on the band c, which allows it to slide freely around on the outside of the entire band, exposing one letter at a time, as shown in the drawing at the letter Y. The shield, being between the brand and the surface to be marked, is held in place by the pressure on the handle.
The advantages Of this brand are, rapidity of marking and proper spacing Of the letters, when used One at a time, whereby any turned and adjusted for the next letter with l great rapidity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire tO secure by Letters Paten t, is
l. The band c, with letters or figures cut through it and fastened around a circular frame Or wheel, with the surface of the lettered band at Or near a right angle to the side or face of the frame, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. rIhe circular frame a and handle b, when used in connection with the band c, substantially as and -for the purpose herein shown and described.
3. The stencil-brand consisting of the frame a, the handle b, the band c, and the shield d, all made and operating .as herein shown and described.
