E. W. FROST.
Rubber Erasegs.
N0. 137,299, PatentedAprilL1873.
igh e} real 3 3 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.EZRA W. FROST, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN RUBBER ERASERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,299, dated April 1, 1873; application filed March 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA W. FROST, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements relating to Rubber Erasers, of which the following-is a specification:
I provide a rigid holder securely fitted, covering the main body of the eraser and allowin g the edges to project. The holder is adapted to allow the finger and thumb to enter or partially enter. The holder for this reason forms a more convenient handle than any before known. to me.
The accompanying drawing forms a part of this specification, and represents what I con sider' the preferable means of carrying out the device.
Figure l is a side elevation; and Fig. 2, a central section.
Similar letters of reference represent like parts in both the figures.
The body is represented with eight angles and eight straight sides. The number may be increased or diminished at pleasure. The
material may be pure vulcanized rubber or analogous gum, or the same mixed with various earthy or other materials to produce an efiicient eraser for pencil marks or ink, or both. A considerable hole is formed in the middle of the sheet A, the material thus removed being utilized for other purposes. A metallic grummet, analogous to those used in sails, is applied to cover a considerable portion of each face, the two sides taking a firm hold on the rubber material by reaching through the central hole. One face is formed by the part B,
which spreads out on one side of the eraser and reaches through in branches, by means of the split portions B B B, and clenches on the other side of the eraser. The other face is formed by the part (3, which is correspondingly spread on the opposite face of the device, and reaches through the central hole, and is spread, like an eyelet, concentrically within the face B on the opposite side, as is indicated by O.
The work may be rapidly effected by suitable dies. The parts B B U 0 may be of Germ an silver or other fine metal, or a coarse metal plated.
I can realize nearly the same benefit by simply riveting through the rubber with a slender rivet, which shall entirely fill a small hole produced; but in such case the faces should be struck up in dies or otherwise formed so as to be concave at and near their centers, and allow the hand to get the same firm hold as by partially entering the large hole shown.
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, the centrally-hollowed eraser described, having the hollow face-pieces B O secured together through the erasive material A, and adapted to serve as herein specified.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand this 3d day of March, 1873, in the pres- V ence of two subscribing witnesses. I
EZRA W. FROST.
Witnesses WM. (J. DEY, ALFD. WESTBROOK.
