Be it known that l, lenire citizen oit the United States, res ng at Greene, in the county or' Butler, State of lowa, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Heaters for Stock-Tatering rlanks; and l do hereby declare the iollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to heaters for stock tanks, although it will oi course be understood that it may be employed '.tor heating liquids in various types or containers and for any orn the various purposes for which it may be adapted.
rllhe object of the invention is to provide a construction of heater that will insure an eilicient circulation of heated water through the tank so that the entire body of water will have a substantially uniform temperature, the result to be attained with economy of fuel.
A further object et the invention is to provide a construction in which the major. heating effect will be had Vthrough the medium of water taken into the heater and discharged from it into the tank, the particular construction and arrangement being such that the body of cooler'water in the tank, will not interfere by its cooling effect, with the circulation of water through the heater. @ther objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the 'following description.
ln the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view showing a. tank equipped with the present heater, the tank being shown in vertical section with its central portion broken away to permit of showing on a larger scale and the heater being shown in elevation at its water intake side.
Fig. 2 is top view of the heater, a part ot its intake water pipe being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, through the burner, the water inlet and outlet and the associated parts.
Fig. 4ris a vertical section on line L t-ll or Fig. 2, illustratingthe water inlet opening through the hot plate.
Referring now to the drawings the pres- V. l-loneiN, a
ent heater comprises a hollow casing, pret y erably et sheet metal and including a base 10, from one end of which extends the vertical tlue 11, that is preferably rectangular in cross section, although it may have other different shape, the length of this liuc being such that its upper end will stand well above the water level oi' the tank. The flue 11 is provided with a removable cover 12 and near its upper edge are formed in its side walls, the air inlet openings 13.
At the end of the base opposite to the flue 11 and rising 'from the top of the base, is an air circulating pipe or stack 14% so that air may circulate down through the flue 11, thence transversely through the base and linally upwardly and out ot the top of the stack. i
A Ypart of the top wall ot the base is formed by acomparatively heavy iron plate 15 that constitutes what might be termed a hot plate 7 tor the heater, it being disposed directly over a burner 16, preferably of thc hydro-carbon type, that is disposed in the base and directly beneath the plate. Fuel -or the burner is supplied through a pipe 17, ot the hollow wire type, and leads upwardly through the flue 11 and outwardly through its wall near to its upper end, where it may connect with any source of supply.
Over the hot plate 15 and extending downwardly oic one side of the base'ot the apparatus, is a plate 18, having marginal flanges that are secured te the base and which hold the plate in spaced relation to the side of the base and to the hot plate. rlhe portion or" the plate 18 that depends at the side of the base is provided with an inlet pipe 19 Jfor connection of a hose or other type of pipe 20 that .leads to the opposite end of the tank 21 trom that end in which the heater is disposed. The interspace between the plate 18 and the side wall of the base and the hot plate, constitutes a water circulating chan1- ber, the side edge portion et the hot plate that overhangs the side wall oi' the base and within the said chamber, having a series ot vertical openings 21 through it to permit of passage of water from the vertical part 22 of the water chamber to the horizontal part 23, from which latter the water passes through a series of perforations 24: in its opposite side, to the body of water in the tank.
Vln order that the water passing over the hot plate 15 may not be materially cooled by the body of water in the tank and circulation of water through the heater be retarded, a plate 25 is provided above the horizontally extending portion of the plate Y' portion of the stood. l
To vary the draft toV the. lfmrn'eifj the adacen wa oi me Lne il las menos l t ll l l Ll *l l l ed against it slide plate 27, having; suitable*y o'nidos end which l h't* l l* "ti "ll .o s ,i when s iltec einen y Varies the effective epening betweenV the fluer and the portion of the hase occupied by the burner, the lower edgefportlon oit `the Jplate 27 having an opening 2S through it to prevent entire shutting off kot the draft.
lt Will thus he seen that there/.is provided a construction in' which Water will he drawn from one end of the tank and passed .through the heater and then will discharge into thehody of Water at the other end ot plate 18, will 'be under- VWill he established a` circulation in the tanlr from end ,te end that will be inodilied by the natural movement of heated Waterupwardly through a body ot water of lesser temperan ture.
