V TANK-HEATER" Specification of Letters Patent. P te t f 6,'
Application filed March 31, 1520. Serial No. 370,320.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT OTMERE DOHM and AUGUST J. Dome, citizens of the United States, residing at Dane,in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements in T ank-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to water heaters for farm purposes; usually employed for tempering the drinking water in stock watering tanks; and the objects of our invention are, first, to provide a device that presents a maximum heating surface to the water; second, to be able to heat a small amount of water to boiling point if desired; and, third,
to control the combustion of fuel, by a new I and efficient arrangement of dampers.
We attain these objects by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings in which 2 Figure 1, is a plan; Flg. 2, is a vertical on line AB Fig. 1,
Fig. 3, is a front elevation; F1 4, 1s a .vertlcal transverse section, on
line 54), Fig. 2.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The outer casing, comprising side walls 1 and 2, rounded at the lower rear corners, and a continuous plate, which forms the front end 3, the bottom 1, and the rear end 5, said plate is welded to the sides and forms a water tight structure; a second water tight receptacle, is formed of sides 6, and 7, which are rounded at both lower corners, and a plate 8, which forms both ends and the bottom, and is welded to the sides; said sides are flanged outward at the top a distance adapted to rest upon the top flanges 9, of the outer casing when the receptacle is placed within the same, said receptacle is much less in length, and slightly less in width and depth than the outer casing and is disposed in the top thereof, a distance from the front end suflicient toform a fire box 10; a channel 11, is secured to the sides of the fire box in alinement with each other, extending from the rear top to the front side adjacent the bottom, a damper plate12, provided with a handle 13, is slidably disposed in the channels and extends across the fire box, a grate 14, is provided, which abuts the front end of the receptacle and longitudinal section,
covers the bottom of the fire-box to within a distance of the front end, and registers with the lower end 'of the damperplate 12,
thereby forming a narrow air passage 15, in front of the grate. By raising the damper plate 12, or removing thesame, the grate can'be turned edgewise'and taken out of the firebox, facilitating the cleaning of the heater. The receptacle being narrower than the casing, a smoke flue 16, is formed at each side thereof, and a combustion chamber 17, is formed between the bottom 1, of the outer casing and the bottom 8, of the receptacle, said chamber extending from the fireboX 10, backward and upward to the smoke outlet 18, said outlet is a cast metal hood, extending across the casing and terminate ing in a pipe collar 19. A horizontal slidable cover 20, is disposed on flanges 9, on the sides 1, i and, 2, of the casing and is adapted to be used as a sliding damper, or to entirely'cover the firebox. To utilize the entire heating surface of the heater, two or more tubes 21, are provided, extending from the inside of the receptacle to the outside of the casing, permitting water to pass from a watering tank 22, into the receptacle,
wooden wedges 23, are provided for closing said tubes by inserting them in loops 2 1, which are secured to the inside of the receptacle in front of the tubes. Holes 25,
' are located in the flanges 9, of the casing sides 1, and 2, through which rods 26, are disposed for anchoring the heater to the bottom of the tank by means of screw eyes;
27. A cover 28, with a handle 29, covers the entire receptacle and is prevented from moving endwise by depending vflangesfiO. WVhen desired to heat a small amount of water to boiling point, put on the cover 2 8, and I insert the wedges 23, in the loops 24c, closing the tubes 21.
To use our heater a fire is started in the grate 1 1, and the'damper 12, placed in its ,lower position, see Figs 1 and 2, in that position the draft will be in front and under the grate, then regulate the supply of air by the slidable cover 20, to check the fire, raise the damper 12, and close the cover 20. 1 Having thus described our invention We claim.
In a device of the kind described, the combination of an outer water tight casing, with an inner water tight compartment, the two connected by tubes, and means for closing the tubes, a firebox between the front tures in the presence of twosubsbribing ends of the casing and the compartment, :1 Witnesses.
- grate near the bottom ofthe firebox, and v a RQBERT OTMERE DOHM a sliding 'cover'and a diagonal damper plate AUGUST J. DOHM; 5 adapted to be used to regulate the locality I Witnesses: V
and supply of air to the grate. v WILLIAM ODWYER, In testimony whereof We aflixour signav V OORA M. LOCKWOOD.
