` TEE@ STATES@ SAMUEL HITE, 0F ATWOOD, INDIANA.
TANK-HEATER.
1,256,560. Specification of Application filed August 26 To all whom t may concern:
yBe it known that l, SAMUEL Hirn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atwood, in the county of Kosciusko, State of Indiana., have invented a new and useful Tank-Heater;- and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others' skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tank heaters, land has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies` novel features of construction whereby the water in a drinking trough or fountain can be readily kept from freezing yin cold weather.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which will warm the water within the trough in an effective manner so that it will not freeze in cold weather, which admits of the heater being detached from the trough when not in use, and which can be ouickly assembled or taken apart.
wWith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novelcombinations and arrangements ofthe parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being point-e ed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a tank heater constructed in accordance with the invention, portions of the smoke pipe being broken away.
Fig. Q is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the upper end of the smoke pipe removed.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a drinking trough which may be conveniently formed of sheet metal and which is open at the top, said trough being supported in an elevated position in any suitable manner, as by means of the standards 2. A flue 3 extends upwardly from an opening in the bottom of the trough 1, the

lower e-nd of flue having a water tight connection with the edges of the opening, while the upper end of the flue extends above the top of the trough and is provided with the diametrically opposed bayonet slots 1. The water 5 in the trough 1 surrounds the line 3, the said flue being preferably located at substantially the center of the trough.
Extending transversely across the bottom of the trough 1 is a pair of guide members 6 which have a parallel relation to each other, and may be conveniently formed from Z bars. Ther exterior of the trough 1, andthe bottom thereof, with the exception of theV area between the guide members 6 is covered with layer 7 of insulating material, such as asbestos, thereby preventing radia tion of the heat from the sides of the trough.
A lire box 8 is adapted to be applied to the bottom of the trough, the top of the fire box beingprovided with lateral flanges 9 which engage the guide members 6, and being also provided with an opening 10 which registers with the lower end of the flue 3 when the lire box is in position. The front of the fire box is provided with the door 11 for closing the opening through which fuel is placedinto the fire box. Below the door 11 is a second door 12 which has a damper controlled draft opening 13 therein, said door normally closing the opening through which the ashes are removed. This fire box can be readily inserted in position or removed therefrom, and may be constructed of sheet metal, being adapted to burn wood or coal as occasion reoluires.
After the lire box has been mounted in position a smoke pipe 14 is inserted in the iiue 3, the lower end of the smoke pipe being slightly contracted at 11a, so as to tightly engage the edges of the opening` 10 in the top of the fire box. This smoke pipe is provided with the conventional form of damper 15, the damper spindle 16 projecting upon opposite sides of the smoke pipe and engaging the bayonet slots 4 in the top f the flue 3 when the smoke pipe is in position. This smoke pipe extends a suitable distance above the trough 1, the upper end thereof being provided with a cap 17 which has a screen 18 fitted therein to prevent the escape of live sparks. Vhen the parts are properly assembled and a tire started in the box 8 the water within the trough 1 is heated so that it will not freeze in cold weather. In mild weather when it is not necessary to use the heater, the fire box and smoke pipe can be readily removed. All of the parts are readily accessible for the purpose of making repairs, and the entire device can be constructed of sheet metal, so that the cost thereof will not be excessive.
In order to insure the heating of the Water at the ends of the tank which is some distance from the fire box and flue, a series of heating pipes are extended along the bottom of the tank from the lire box toward both ends of the tank. In the present instance .elbows 20 are shown as threaded in openings in the bottom of the tank which register with openings 2l in the top of the fire box, the said elbows being arranged upon oppo` site sides of the Hue 3. A manifoldl 2z is Varranged near each end of the tank and is connected to the elbows 20 by small pipes or tubes 23. The heated gases from the furnace may thus pass upwardly through the openings 2l in the top of the fire box and circulate through the pipes 23 and manifolds 22 so as to heat the water in the ends of tank which would not, especially in extremely cold weather, be heated by the ire box and flue 3 alone.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tank water heater including a. trough, a flue extending upwardly through the trough and opening through the top and Y bottom thereof, transverse guide members extending across the bottom of the trough, a removable re box flanges which are slidably engaged by the before mentioned guide members to support Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each,
Washington, D. C.
provided with sidev the fire box, said fire box having an opening in the top thereotl adapted to register with a smoke pipe extending through the trough, a line extending upwardly through'l the trough and opening through the top and bottom thereof, the upper end of the flueV being provided with vciiametrically opposed W bayonet slots, transversely disposed guideY members extending across the bottom of the trough, a removable iire box provided with side flanges which are slidably engaged by' the said guide members to support the lire box, said tire box having an opening in the top thereof adapted to be brought into registry with the iiue, a smoke pipe extending through the flue and having the lowerend thereof in engagement with the opening of the fire box to hold the fire box in position, and a damper within the smoke pipe, said damper including a spindle of which `the ends are adapted to interlock net slots of the fiue to hold the smoke pipe in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. Y
SAMUEL Hirn.
