FLOYD J'. NILFFENEGGER, OF NEAR KALONA, IOWA.
STOCK WATER HEATER.
Application filed .Tune 15, 1923. Serial No. 645,629.
To all whom t maf/y concern:
Be it known that I, FLOYD J. NIFFENEG- GER, a citizen of the United States, and resif dent of near Kalona, in the county of Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock Water Heaters, of which the Vfollowing is a specification. p
An important purpose of the present invention is to provide a drinking trough combined with a water heater embodying a combustion chamber and wall portions intervening between the said chamber and the bottom of the trough to shield the latter from direct contact with the flames wherebyT the life of the trough is considerably prolonged.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide float controlled means regulating the supply of vwater to the trough and including a feed pipe extending through the body of the heater so as to be exposed to the heated gases generated therein.
Other purposes and advantages of the invention, not specifically stated in the foregoing, will become apparent from the following detailed description and accompanying drawings.y v
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a water tank and heater constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the construction shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 represents a rectangular furnace or heat-er casing closed at the'top, bottom, sidesl and ends and provided interiorly with upper and lower plates 6 and 7 extending rearwardly from the front casing wall 8 to a point spaced from the rear wall 9. The upper plate 6 constitutes a baiiie extending in spaced parallelism with the top casing wall 10 and, at a point directly above the forward end of the plate, the said top wall 10 is provided with a smoke outlet collar 11 receiving thereon the lower end of a smoke pipe 12. The lower plate 7 which extends in spaced parallelism with the bottom casing wall 13 carries a suitable grate 14 and terminates in a vertically extending wall 15 which serves to prevent the ashes from being pushed oify of the rear end of the grate onto the bottom `of the casing and alsol acts as a deflector for directing the products of combustion'toward the top wall 10, it being understood that the plates 6v and 7 extend to form a combustionl chamber y16,-into.
which the fuely is deposited through aV feed t i opening 17 formed in the front'casingwall S. Thesaid front wall 8 is also'provided the latter opening being utilized for removing the soot accumulating on the upper surface of the said bafiie.
In accordance with myvinvention, the top l wall of the casing 5 is utilizedto support thereon a rectangular drinking ltrough 20 which is open at the top and is provided with an arrangement of longitudinal and `transverse wires 21, affording individual drinking openings 22, each of which is of sufficient size to permit the headof-a single animal to extend therethrough.
-Water is supplied to the trough 20 through a feed pipe 23` extending upwardly through ythe bottom and top walls of the casing 5 and through the bottom wall of the trough 20, the upper end of said pipe being equipped with any suitable type of valve controlled by a float 24, in such manner as to keep-the water in the tank l20 at a substantially constant level.
In the use of the device, the fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber 16 through the feed opening 17 and the products of combustion issuing from the said chamber 16 are directed by the vertical wall 15 into contact'with the top casing wall 10 to pass forwardly between the lower surface Preferably the trough`20 is made to eX-. tend the full width of the Casing, but is 60 the full width of the casing and cooperate with the side and front walls of the latter somewhat shorter than the said casing so as to eXtend from the rear wall 9 to a point in spaced relation to the front wall 8, thereby leaving the forward portion of the top wall 10 exposed to provide for the connection of the smoke pipe 12 to the outlet collar 11. l.Vith this arrangement, the casing 5, instead of being mounted on the surface ot the ground as shown in the present illustration may be placed in a shallow pit or ditch so that the top wall of the easing will be level with the ground surface and, in such event,
the clearance reserved between the forward end of the trough Q0 and the smoke pipe 12 will enable a tence to be built around the latter to prevent the animals from displacing the saidpipe when crowding around the water tank.
It; has been found in practice that the use of a single bathe 6, positioned as shown between, the grate 14 and the top wall ot' the casing 5 provides for an improved and desired circulation of the products of combustion issuing from the chamber 16.
Having thus fully disclosed what I now consider to be the preferred embodiment ot my invention, I reserve the right to resort vto such changes inthe detail construction and relative arrangement of parts as may later prove desirable, providing, of course, that the contemplated changes come within the scope of the appended claims and do not constitute a departure `from the spirit ot' the invention delined thereby.
What I claim is:
1. A device of-the character described comprising a drinking trough open at the top, a heater including a casing positioned with its top wall underlying and supportinv the bottom wall of the trough, upper and lower plates extending rearwardly from the iront wall of the casing and defining an intervening combustion chamber, said upper plate being spaced from the top wall of the casing to provide a return flue leading forwardly to an outlet formed in the top wall ot the casing at a point adjacent the front wall thereof, said lower plate being equipped to form a grate and being spaced from the bottom wall of the casing to provide an intervening draft passage and a smoke pipe connected with the aforementioned outlet.
2. 1n a device of the character described, the combination of a drinking trough open at the top, a heater comprising a casing including a top wall underlying and supporting the bottom wall of the drinking trough, upper and lower plates extending rearwardly from the front wall of the casing and defining an intervening combustion. chamber, said upper plate being spaced from the top and rear walls of the casing to provide a return iue extending forwardly to an outlet formed in the top wall of the casing atthe front end thereof, said lower plate being equipped to form a grate and being spaced :trom the bottom wall of the casing to provide an intervening draft passage and a vertical wall jiormed at the rear end of said lower plate to provide a guard preventing 'ashes passing over the rear end of the grate and on to the bottom wall of the casing.y
1n testimony whereof l hereunto atlix my signature.
