HOT WATER BOILER Filed Aug. 10, 1948 Zinnentor KEN/V6 TH S. HOLMES (Itiomeg Patented July 1 1, 195) HOT-WATER BOILER Kenneth S. Holmes, Ngyv Kensington, Pa., as-
signor to Harry 0. Holmes, Oakmont, Pa.
Application August 10, 1948, Serial No. 43,527
This invention relates to an improved water boiler, and important objects and advantages thereof are to provide a water heater of the characterdescribed, which will function most efficiently and quickly to heat the water to the required temperature and to maintain the water at such temperature even with frequent withdrawals with a minimum fuel consumption, and which embodies a cold water inlet pipe that projects into the tank from the bottom of the latter whereby the'cold water inlet pipe will not tend to cool the heated water by extending through the heated water in the manner of the conventional type of domestic water heater.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of the class stated, which operates to supply cold water to the water tank with a minimum of agitation and which will not roil or disturb the Water even if the latter is heated to a high temperature, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, durable and efilcient in its use, and comparatively economical in its manufacture, installation, operation, and maintenance.
To the accomplishment of these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but it is to be understood that changes in the form, proportions and details of construction may be resorted to that come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, partly in section, of a water boiler constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse cross sectional view of the hot water tank taken on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing I represents a cylindrical hot water tank constructed of sheet metal and being generally of the conventional type commonly employed for domestic purposes. The tank is disposed vertically on a suitable supporting base 2, and includes a top 3 and a bottom 4, which provide a closed tank structure. A hot water outlet pipe 5 is secured in the tank top 3, preferably in the diametric center of the latter, and communicates with the upper end of the tank.
A water heating mechanism 6, of any suitable conventional construction, is carried by the side wall of the tank I, and includes a heating coil 1 Claim. (01. 126-362) 'I and a gas burner 8. The operation of the heating mechanism is preferably automatically controlled by any suitable conventional type of thermostat 9, which latter is connected with the tank and joined with the supply pipe In from the source of the fuel supply, and with the feed pipe I'I that-supplies the fuel to the burner 8.
The'upper end of the heating coil 1 is communicably joined with the tank I by a supporting connection I2, and the lower end of the heating coil is communicably joined with the tank by a similar supporting connection I3. A novel feature of the invention is that the heating mechanism 6 is positioned on the tank I at a considerable distance above the tank bottom 4 so that the lower coil supporting connection I3 will be disposed approximately eighteen inches above the tank bottom.
The elevated position of the heating mechanism 6 will cause the heating mechanism to function with maximum efllciency. It will be obvious that all water entering the lower end of the heating coil I, from the tank I through the lower supporting connection I3, is already preheated to a certain degree, and will be rapidly circulated through the heating coil and thereby will be quickly heated to the required and regulated temperature.
The important feature of the invention resides in the positional arrangement of the cold water inlet pipe l4, which is secured in the tank bottom 4 and joined with the source of the water supply, and which projects vertically upward from the tank bottom into the tank I to a height approximately in horizontal alignment with the lower supporting connection I3, of the heating mechanism 6.
The upper free end of the cold water inlet pipe I4 within the tank I is closed, and the upper end portion of said inlet pipe is provided with a plurality of relatively small, laterally disposed apertures I5. The cold water, on issuing from the apertures I5, will be directed to enter the tank in a horizontal direction, and in small streams, thereby eliminating the liability of agitating the sediment accumulations deposited on the tank bottom 4 and the consequent discoloration of the hot water supply. In the conventional type of water boiler, the lower end of the cold water inlet pipe is disposed close to the bottom of the tank and is open, allowing the full stream of water to enter the tank in the downward direction, and thereby invariably disturbing the sediment accumulations on the tank bottom particularly if the water is hot at the tank sediment accumulations on the tank bottom is reduced to a minimum.
It will here be noted that the efiiciency of the improved water boiler is greatly increased by eliminating the suspension of the cold water i i-1' let pipe from the tank top and through theheated water in the tank in the conventional manner, as it is apparent that the passage of cold water through a pipe extending in heated Water will tend to: chill the latter to an. appreviable degree.
,In the operation of the improved water boiler, the embodied elevated heating, mechanism is constantly functioning with a volume of preheated water to quickly raise the latter to the regulated temperature with an efiiciency closely approximating the operation of the conventional type of instantaneous water heating apparatus.
The present invention, provides a most efiicient and durable device of itsv kind, which may be economically constructed, and successfully employed for the purpose and in the manner herein set forth.
What I claim is:
In combination, a water boiler of the class described, comprising a tank including a top and a bottom, a hot Water outlet pipe connected with said top, a heating mechanism including a heating coil, said coil having the ends; thereof communicably joined withsaid tank'at a considerable distance above said bottom, and a cold water inlet pipe extending vertically in said tank and having the lower end thereof secured in said bottom, the upper free end of said inlet pipe being closed and being disposed at a height approximately in horizontal alignment with the lower joined end of said coil, the upper end portion of said inlet pipe being provided with a plurality ofcomparatively small laterally disposed discharge apertures.
