lMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.7137,223, dated March 25, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ADAM LoEEEELEoLz and ANTON PRIER, residing in Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain Improvement in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to a certain improve` ment in lanterns; and it consists of the combination, with the guard or fender rim, of a support or ring for the chimney, and of the general construction, combination, and arrangement of the constituent parts of the lantern, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

Fig. 2 is a View in elevation of the lamp detached; Fig. 3, a horizontal section ot' Fig. 2 taken through the dotted line .fr x; Fig. 4, a side view of that part ofthe lamp upon which the chimney rests; Fig. 5, a horizontal section through the rim which receives the lower extremities of the wires or fenders of the lantern 5 and Fig. 6 is a vertical section through the upper end or part of the lantern taken from a point at a right angle to that at which Fig. 1 is taken.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by similar letters of reference.

A refers to the lamp, upon the foot of which, soldered or otherwise suitably fastened thereto, is a vertical ring or wall, a, which, in consequence of its being isolated from the elevated or upper part of the lamp, forms a chamber, into which lits or' enters the part B of the lamp. The said part performs the oil iice of holding the lamp-chimney in place upon the lamp, and is supplied with lateral prof jectionsV b b both upon its lower and upper extremities, those upon its lower end entering open slots a1 in the part or lamp-ring a, and held therein by next passing through openings a4 in metallic springs or catches co2 attached to the ring a. These spring-catches are inclosed by staples a3 to prevent their being bent back too far when operated. Through this arrangement and construction of parts the lamp can be withdrawn without disturbing the chimney, which it is very often desirable to do-as when the lamp is to be filled with oil--an occurrence which takes place perhaps every two or three days. Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-

l. In combination with the rim C having the openings c c, and supplied with the spring catch c1 and fenders C C, the chimney-suprport B b with an overhanging Aiange, substantiall y as shown, and for the purpose described.
