Description

Q. BI YAPLE.
SOCKET WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED IAN. a, 1920.

. @Howl m QUINCY BATES YAPLE, 0F ARLINGTON, KANSAS.
Soenar-WRENCH.
` Specification of Letters lPatent.`
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
Application mea January a, 1920. serial` No, 349,321.
To all w hom it may Vconcern Be it known that I, QUINGY B. YAPLE., a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Reno and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Socket-Wrenches, oftwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certainnew and useful improvements in socket wrenches and designed primarily for use in tightening, loosening and removing nuts which bind or clamp elements employed in automobile engine constructions, more particularly nuts not accessible to the ordinary type of wrench and for other purposes wherein the wrench .is found applicable, and the invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a wrench which is sim le in its construction and arrangement. C a
fio
` wrench comprises a strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth and more specically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to as come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through my wrench, and Fig. 2 is a section taken on drawings in detail, the body portion 1 which is elongated and has a longitudinal bore for receiving the shaft 11. An integral arm 2 extending below and parallel to the body 1 is provided with a sleeve 3 which has a bore extending at right angles to the bore provided in the body 1.
A air of arms 4 extend from the other end of the body 1 at right angles thereto and terminate in the arms 17 which extend par allel to the body 1. The arms 17 terminate in the sleeve 5 and a pocket 6 for receiving the shaft 7 which carries the socket 8.
A beveled gear 9 is fixedly mounted upon the shaft 7 and situated adjacent the lower end of the sleeve 5 and meshes with a beveled gear 10 mounted upon the shaft 11. Upon the other end of the shaft 11 is mounted the beveled gear 12 which meshes with a beveled Referring to the gear 13 carried by a shaft 1/1 extending through the sleeve 3. A bell-crank lever 15 o f the usual construction is provided contiguous with the shaft 111 and has the usual handle or knob 16.
From the above description it is clear that by the rotation of the shaft 14 by means of the bell-crank lever 15 that rotary motion will be given to the beveled gear 13 thereby rotating the beveled gear 12 so as to in turn give rotary movement tothe shaft 11. This shaft 11 will rotate the beveled gear 10 which is meshed with the beveled gear 9 thereby causing the shaft 7 to rotate for revolving the socket 8.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body provided with a longitudinal bore, a shaft mounted within said body, one end of said body provided with a depending arm terminating in a right angular extension running parallel with said body, a sleeve provided upon said arm, said sleeve extending at right angles to the bore of said body, a pair of arms offset from the other end of said body and ex tending parallel thereto, one of said arms provided with a sleeve having a bore extending at right angles with the bore in said body and the other arm provided with a pocket, a shaft having beveled gears at each end mounted within the longitudinal bore of said body, a shaft having a socket on one end and a beveled gear adapted to mesh with one of the beveled gears of the shaft extending through the bore of said body, said socket shaft adapted to pass through the sleeve provided in one of the pair of said arms at the end of the last mentioned shaft, swiveled in the pocket provided'in the other arm of the said shaft, an operating shaft having a beveled gear adapted to mesh with the beveled gear provided upon the shaft provided in the body portion extending through the sleeve provided in the first mentioned arm, and means provided for operating the last mentioned shaft.
2. A device of the class described comprising a body portion, a shaft rotatably extending therethrough and having gears upon each end, a pair of arms extending from said body portion, one of said arms terminating in a sleeve and the other arm terminating in a pocket, a shaft extending through said shaft and means tioned shaft for rotating same.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
