WILLIAM H. TOBUREN, OF FAIRMONT, NEBRASKA.
BAND-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
Application filed March 2, 1913. Serial No. 22o,ooe.
To all whom it concern: Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. TonURnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmont, in the county of Fillmore and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and Holders, of which the following lication, reference being had to panying drawings.
his invention relates to an improved hand holder and has for its primary ob ect to provide a very simple device for holding the low speed, reverse and brake bandson the respective drums of the transmlsslon mechanism of a motor vehicle while the transmission cover is being removed or replaced.
it is a more particular object of my 1nvention to provide a device for the above purpose consisting of a .single U-shape'd metal rod which is adapted to straddle the spaced ends of the several bands whereby the latter are held against turning movement on the respective drums, and means attached to said rod to prevent the same from dropping to the bottom of the transmission case and after the cover has been replaced.
It is also a further general object of my invention to provide a device of the above purpose which is exceedingly simple and can be manufactured at relatively small cost and is highly serviceable for the purpose in view.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved form and construction of the several parts of the device as will be hereinafter more fully described, subsequently claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters deslgnate corresponding parts throughout the several views and wherein;
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of application and use of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail elevation of the band holder.
Referring in detail to designates a rod or bar of ter which is is a specithe accomthe drawing, 5 requisite diamebent into substantially U- shaped form to provide the parallel arms 6 connected by the intermediate ortion 7.
",1,- The low speed, reverse and rake bands of the power transmission mechanism of a motor vehicle as indicated at B are prouseful Improvements in Band-- to facilitate its removal vided in the Ford type of motor vehicle at e angularly upexperienced proper rela- I have obof the rod 5 are disposed horizontally against the outer sides of the terminal lugs 6, thereby preventing sliding or separation of the ends of the bands and holding them in frictional contact upon the ends of the drum. The transmission cover may now be arranged uponthe lower section of the case and securely bolted in place; A chain or other flexible element indicated at 8 is attached at one of its ends to the intermediate portion 7 of the rod 5' and by means of this chain, the rod 5 may be pulled longitudinally'and the arms 6 thereof disengaged from the terminal lugs b of the bands and Withdrawn through the opening in the top of the transmissmn cover. Also the liability of the rod 5 dropping into the bottom of the transmission cover is largely obviated. The device is of course applled and used in a similar manner in removing the transmission cover.
From the fore oing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of use and several advantages of my invention will be clearly and fully understood. The improved band holder is of very simple form and can be manufactured at relatively small cost. I have also found the device to be highly serviceable in practical use. The holder can of course be made in various sizes and can also be produced in other forms than that illustrated in the accompanynig drawings.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred form and construction of the several parts, it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of considerable modification and I therefore reserve the privilege of adopting all changes as'may be fairl the spirit and scope ,oi claimed.
embodied within the invention as considerablesuch legitimate ture, 5 scribed consisting of a a band holder of the character desingle U-shapedmember having parallel arms adapted for frictional engagement with the terminal lugs of the bands, and means connected to the medial portion of the member for with- 10 drawing the member from its applied position.
A band holder of the character described consisting of a substantially U- shaped member having side arms adapted for frictional engagement with the terminal ears of the bands and provided in its medial portion with an opening.
In testimony whereof (I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. TOBUREN. Witnesses:
E. F. SGHWEDHELM, FRANK C. WILLIAMS.
