WITNE 5:
F ATTORNEY UNITED srATes ATENT OFFlQE.
ALEX M. LOUGHMILLER, 0F CROWELL, TEXAS.
PENHOLDER.
Application filed July 25,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEX M. Looornrrr- LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crowell, in the county of Foard and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to pen holders, and has for its primary object the provision of a holder from which the pen po1nt can be easily and quickly ejected without taking hold of the point, thus protecting the fingers from being soiled.
More specifically stated, the invention embodies a spring pressed rod which is movable longitudinally through the pen holder, carrying a slide which co-operates with a wedgeshaped element arranged withln the pen holder for holding the pen in position for use, the slide operating to e ect the pen from the holder when the rod is moved in one direction.
In carrying out the invention, Iprovide means whereby the tension of the spring can he quickly and easily regulated from one end of the pen holder.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in con nection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through a pen holder, constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a detail view of the movable rod removed from the pen holder.
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure a is a detail view of the slide.
Figure 5 is a similar view of the wedgeshaped element.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 10 indirates a pen holder of usual well known.
construction, excepting that the holder is provided with opposed slots 10 for a purpose to be presently described. Positioned within the holder 10 is what I term a wedge element 11., this element being curved to conform to the curvature of the pen indicated Specification of Letters Patent.
1921. Serial No. 487,434. 7 at 12. The element 11 is bifurcated to provide pointed prongs or branches 12 which are adapted to be imbedded in the pen holder 10 as illustrated in Figure 1. This element 11 is further provided with lugs 13 which project from the opposed sides of the element and pass through the slots 10 of the pen holder and through aligned slots 1% provided in a ferrule 10 which surrounds the lower end of the pen holder 10. In this manner, the element 11 is held fixed relative to the pen holder 10.
A rod 16 is arranged longitudinally through the pen holder 10, the rod projecting from one end of this holder and threaded as at 17 to accommodate an adjusting nut 18. A spring 19 encircles this rod and bears against the nut 18 to normally hold the rod 1.6 projected from the small end of the pen holder. A sleeve like member 20 surrounds the pen holder for a portion of its length, and conceals from view, that portion of the rod 16 and the spring 19 which projects from one end of the holder. The opposite end of. the rod 16 terminates to provide a. hook-like portion 21 which is passed through an opening 22 in a slide 23, the latter being curved correspondingly with the pen 12, and the wedge-shaped member above described for a purpose to be presently set forth. The slide is actuated through the instrumentality of the rod 16, and when the rod is in its normal position, the slide is arranged within the pen holder and effectively grips and holds the pen 12 positioned for use be tween the slide and the wedge-shaped mem her. When it is desired to separate the pen from the holder, it is only necessary to de press the rod 16 against the tension of the spring, which results in moving the slide from one end of the holder and at the same time ejecting the pen so that the latter will fall from the holder. In this manner, the pen can be quickly and easily ejected without touching the latter, and thus preventing the hands or fingers from being'soiled in the performance of this duty. It is obvious that by adjusting the nut 18, the tension of the spring can be varied from time to time as the occasion may require.
While it is believed that from the fore going description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not, limit myself to what is herein shown and Patented Mar. 7, 1922.
l0 tire to said holder,
described, and that such changes may he resorted to when desired as all Within the scope of What is claimed.
VVhat I claim is:-
In combination, a pen holder havingslots adjacent one end, a Wedge-shaped element positioned Within the holder, attaching lugs carried by said member and passed through said slots for holding the member fixed relaa spring pressed rod movable longitudinally through the holder, a slide carried by one end or the rod and normally positioned Within the holder to hold the pen therehetween and said Wedgesheped member, eject the pen from the holder upon movement of thefrod in one direction.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
