SHEARS-GRINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
Application filed December 15, 1919. Serial No. 344,815.
and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Shears-Grinder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for holding a cutting implement while being ground and likewise for adjustably holding the grinding or abrading element in coactive position relative to the implement holding portion, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efliciency of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation,
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the improved device.
Figs. 3 and 4 are end views of the opposite ends of the device.
The improved device includes a base or support 10 of any suitable material, preferably hard wood.
Attached to the base intermediate the ends, is a plate 11 upturned at the ends as shown at 12 and 13, the portion 12 forming an abutment against which one end of the grinding element 14 is held, as shown. The upturned portion 13 is extended horizontally as shown at 15 and provided with a threaded boss 16.
At the end of the base 10 farthest from the plate 11 and its upturned portion 12, is a stop member 17 through which a clamp screw 18 operates, to engage the grinding element 14 and retain it in position upon the base 10.
By this means the grinding element is firmly held in position on the base and in parallel relation thereto and to the horizontal portion 15 of the supporting plate.
A guide rod comprising a horizontal portion 17 and vertical portion 18 forms a part of the device, the vertical portion being threaded to engage through the threaded boss 16, as shown, and locked in position by a wing nut 19.
By this means the horizontal portion of the guide rod may be adjusted vertically by releasing the wing nut and rotating the rod until the requisite elevation is reached, and then the adjusted position retained by actuating the wing nut which thus serves as a jam or look nut.
A supporting arm formed of two mem-' bers 20 and 21 hingedly united at 22 is disposed above the base 10 and downturned at one end terminating in an eye 23 slidably engaging the horizontal part 17 of the guide rod.
The portion 20 is enlarged laterally as shown to form a nether support for the implement to be ground, for instance one leg 24 of a pair of shears, the implement being held in place by a clamp plate 25 and clamp screw 26.
By this simple arrangement the shears member, or other implement to be ground may be firmly retained in its adjusted position, and at any required angle drawn back and forth over the grinding element and retained at the same angleduring the grinding operation.
The ground edge will thus be true and accurate, and can be ground without danger of turning the edge, as the article is firmly held in the same position relative to the abrading element at all parts of the stroke, and in both directions of the stroke.
The jointing of the arm 20-21, enables the implementbeing ground to be lifted free from the grinding element for inspection, or for removing from or attaching to the holding portion of the device.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be uned horizontally, a grinding element supported on the base and bearing at one end against the stop, a bracket carried by the base and having a clamp screw operating against the grinding element, a' guide rod comprising a vertical portion and a horizontal portion,
means for adjustably supportingthe vertical portion of the guide rod relative to the. horizontal extension of the plate, an arm with one part slidably engaging the hori- 10 zontal portion of the guide rod, and means for supporting an article to be ground re1ative to said arm. a v
