'Ihe present invention relates to a blade sharpening device and, more particularly, to a device for sharpening the blades of scissors.
The principal object of the invention is to pro- 5 Vide a blade sharpening device for use with scissors which will permit scissors to be efliciently sharpened without taking the blades apart and which is readily adaptable for use with scissors of different sizes. As will be apparent from the l following specification, the use of the device is not conned to scissors, since it may be used for sharpening blades of various other types.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following drawings and l specification wherein,
Figure l is a side elevation of the device with a portion of the base broken away;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device with portions removed;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a grinding element holder used in the device;
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the supporting means;
Figure 5 is a detail view of a part of the device;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary View showing a modied form of supporting device;
Figure '7 is a side elevation of a modified form of grinding element; and
Figure 8 is a side elevation, with portions broken away, of a modified form of the device.
Referring to Figures 1 to 5, the base of the device, preferably formed of wood, is designated by the numeral I and has a central cutout portion extending through one end of the base, the
cutout portion being indicated by the numeral I4. Upon the upper surface of the base I, there is fixed a grinding element holder 2 in which is secured a stationary grinding element 3. 'Ihe holder 2 and element 3 are positioned adjacent the inner end of the cutout portion I4 and are bifurcated as shown in Figure 2 so that portions of the grinding element 3 Will extend about the sides of the upper portion of the cutout portion I4.
A bracket 8 is secured to the upper side of the base I, which bracket pivotally supports a second grinding element holder 'I in which is secured a grinding element 5 having a concave grinding face 5. The upper end of the holder 1 is supported in the upper end of the bracket 8 by means of a U-shaped resilient member Il having inwardly projecting arms I0 arranged to be positioned in any one of a series of vertically spaced apertures 9 in the bracket the arms l!) then projecting into the eye I2 formed at the upper end of the holder 'I. The lower end of the holder 1 has .secured thereto one end of a coil `spring I3 arranged in the cutout portion I4, the other end of the .spring being secured to the base I.
It will be observed that by the above arrange- 5 ment, the grinding element 5 may swing outwardly with respect to the grinding element 3 but will be tended to the position shown in Figure l. The provision of ythe vertically spaced apertures 9 -in the bracket 8 will .permit the grinding ele- 10 ment 5 to be raised or lowered relative to the .grinding element 3 to operate upon blades of different angles of cutting edges. Both the grinding elements 3 and 5 may be removable from their respective holders. l
In the use of the device, described above, a pair of scissors may be opened as illustrated in Figure 2 and one blade positioned with its flat surface bearing upon the grinding element 3. The scissors may then be moved in an orbital path as 20 designated by the line I6 in Figure 2, or in a zigzag path as indicated by the line I1. In either event, the grinding element 5 will be swung relative to the grinding element 3 to act upon the cutting edge of the blade, but the concavity of 25 the grinding face of the element 5 will result in the same angular relation between the two grinding elements, regardless of the swinging movement of element 5.
Figure 6 shows a modied form of securing 30 element used to support a grinding element 6a in the bracket 8, this securing element being designated by the numeral Ila and including a single arm Illa extending entirely through the upper end of the bracketv 8. This form of hold- 35 ing means is particularly adapted for use with a grinding element holder 1' having a narrow eyelet I2a at its upper end and, by this arrangement, the holder and the grinding element carried thereby may have a certain degree of lateral 40 movement.
The grinding element 5 described above is of such length that only one end thereof will be exposed to Wear and when this end becomes worn, the element may be reversed in its holder. 45
Figure 7 shows a grinding element 5a which is of but half the length of the element 5 and which will of course be entirely satisfactory, although it is not reversible.
Figure 8 shows a modied form of the device 50 which is of identical construction with the form disclosed in the gures heretofore discussed except that the movable grinding element holder Ia corresponding to the previously discussed holder 'l is supported in a bracket 8a secured 55" to one end of the base I andthe spring I3 is connected to the holder la intermediate its ends.
The grinding element 5b carried by the holder 1a has a convex grinding surface 6', this form of grinding surface being necessary because of the point at which the holder 1a is supported. The holder 1a is adjustable in thebracket 8a by means of the spring element IlV arranged to be tted in vertically spaced apertures 9 in the same manner as has been described above in conl nection with Figures l to 5. The operation of the Figure 8 device is identical with vthat of the device disclosed in Figures 1 to 5.
In both forms of my invention the movement Y ofthe blade on the stones in an orbital or zigzag path as already referred to, produces along the edge of the blade a diagonal grindingrmotion which has the most effective sharpening action with the advantage that the sharpening takes place along constantly changing generating lines of the sharpening surfaces. Also,y 'when the device is used for sharpening scissors,it i's not necessary to ldisconnect the blades. 'I
It will also be noted that the invention isof such design that no considerable degree -of skill is necessary to obtain a properly sharpened blade. Y
I claim: Y
1. A blade sharpening device comprisingI an element having a iiat grinding surface, an 'element having a curved grinding surface, saidY curved surface element being pivotally mounted for bodily swinging movement longitudinally of the grinding surface of said other element, and means to tend said curve-surfacedrelement to a predetermined position with respect to said flatsurfaced element.
2. A blade sharpening device comprising an element having a at grinding surface, an element having a curved grinding surface, said curved surface element being pivotally mounted element will have the same curvical relation to Ying movement longitudinally `of said other element and in said recess, and means to tend said movably grinding element tothe inner portion of the recess in said kfixed element.
