FREDERIO Gr. FORD, OF BRIDGETON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEDSTEADS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIO G. FORD, of Bridgeton, in the county of Cumberland and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the-letters of reference marked thereon makin g a part of this specification.
In hotels, boarding-houses, and other similar places where large bedsteads are used, it takes two persons to clean a bedstead while taking it apart and putting it together again. The object of my invention is to enable one person to attend to this; and, to this end, the nature of my invention consists in hinging or pivoting a leg to the center of each side rail, so that they can be let down to support the bedstead when either end piece is removed. It also consists in one or more hooked rods or bars inserted in the staples on side rails of the bedstead, connecting the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my bedstead.
A A represent the end pieces with posts B B, and O O the side rails, of a bedstead constructed in any of the known and usual Ways. The side rails O O and the posts B B may be connected together by any of the fastenings in use, as this forms no part of my invention. In the center of each rail 0 is hinged or pivoted a leg, D, which may be made of metal,
as shown, or of wood, and, when folded up, let into the rail, or in any suitable way, so that they can be thrown down and support the rails when either of the end pieces is re moved. One person can then easily remove either end for cleaning, and then replace it again, without any assistance;
I do not confine myself to any particular construction or mode of application of the legs D D, only so that they can be folded up and thrown down when needed.
When cleaning the bedstead and the slats are removed, one of the end piecesbeing also removed, the side rails will wabble back and forth. To prevent this I use a rod or bar, G, with a hook, at, at each end to be inserted in a staple, b, on the side rail, thus connecting the side rails together. Such rods or bars, whether of wood or metal, with hooks and staples, as described, may be used throughout the entire bedstead in place of the usual slats.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the hinged or pivoted legs D I) on the rails O O, and one or more connectingrods, G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of January, 1873.
' FREDERIG FORD.
