Description

Toy-Guns.
NO. 137,080. Patented March 25,1873.
/ WITNESSES INVENTCR- Z KW V J AM. P110 nw THOGRAPHIL on MY (osaomvzb FRULESS) UNITED STATES ALFRED JAMES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TQV GUNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 13%,080, dated March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED J AMEs, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Toy Gun, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved gun; Fig. 2, a vertical central longitudinal section of the same; and Fig. 3 a vertical cross-section of the same in the plane of the line on a: in Fig. 2.
My invention relates to that class of toy guns provided with a sliding discharging-rod, operated by means of an elastic cord.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction and operation of guns ofthis class; and to this end it consists in certain novel features relating to the construction and opera tion of the trigger device; it also consists in constructing the stock and the head of the discharging-rod, so that the latter will move in a dove-tail groove in the former, all of which will be hereinafter fully described and set forth.
In the drawing, A represents the barrel, which consists of a hollow cylinder, open at both ends. B is the stock, extending rearward of the barrel, andterminating in a handle or but. G is the piston or discharging-rod arranged in the bore of the barrel. The stock is attached to the barrel, and is so constructed and arranged that the rod or piston C may be drawn back a considerable distance along the stock; and Z1 is a stop, arranged to terminate the rearward movement of the rod before it is wholly drawn from the barrel. In order to terminate the forward movement of the rod G I provide it with a head, 0, somewhat larger than the bore of the barrel. I
In order that the rod 0 may be conveniently drawn back by the operator I make a notch in the head of the rod, as shown at c.
D is a bent spring-catch or look, over which the rod 0 rides freely while being drawn back. Just before the rod 0 reaches the limit of its rearward movement the catch D engages a shoulder, c, on the head of the rod, and prevents the latter from moving forward. E is a trigger, by means of which the catch D is released from its engagement with the rod (3.
It will be observed, from reference to Fig. 2, that the trigger is pivoted to the stock and provided with a jaw, into which the catch D extends, so that the latter will be released from its engagement with the rod 0 by draw; ing the trigger backward, and the next engagement of the rod and catch will set or cook the trigger.
F is an elastic cord, preferably of India rubber, looped over a catch on the stop and passing through the head of the rod 0, so that the latter, when released, will be drawn suddenly forward with greater or less force.
In order to break the force of the blow of the rod 0 against the barrel, I interpose a piece of rubber between these parts, as shown at a.
For the purpose of guiding the movement of the discharging-rod I sink a dovetail-groove into the stock, and fit the head of the rod therein, as shown in Fig. 3.
The load, which may consist of a pea, or any suitable small ball, is inserted at the mouth of the barrel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a toy gun the combination of the stock B, provided with a dovetail-groove, the sliding-head 0 provided with the shoulder c" and fitted into the dovetail-groove of the stock,
the bent spring-catch D engaging the shoulder 0, and the pivoted trigger E engaging the catch D, all arranged to operate together substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.
