CHOKE ATTACHMENT FOR GUNS- Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RANDOLPH P. CORY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Choke Attachment for Guns, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to a choke attachment for guns, and is an improvement on similar devices patented by me September 19, 1889, No. 633,428; December 3, 1901, No. 688,227, and December 10, 1901, No. 688,389.
The object of my present invention is to generally improve the constructions shown in the patents above referred to and to provide a simple easily-operated choke attachment which may be readily applied to the gun-barrel.
A further object of my invention is to arrange an elongated member on the choke attachment which will serve at a sight at the forward end of the gun-barrel.
To the above purposes my invention consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, in whichigure 1 is a top plan view of the end of a gun-barrel equipped with my improved choke attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. .2, Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a gun-barrel in the surface of which adjacent the forward end is formed a series of small recesses 2.
3 designates a cylinder which forms the choke member of the attachment, the intes rior diameter of which is equal to the interior E diameter of a gun-barrel, and the rear end of said cylinder is bored out or formed so as to receive the forward end of the barrel 1, there being an internal shoulder 4 formed, against i which the end of said barrel engages. Passing through the rear end of the cylinder 3 is a I series of screws 5, the inner ends of which are reduced in diameter and engage in the rel 'cesses 2. The outer portion of the cylinder 3 is provided with a series of radially-dis osed longitudinally-extending slots 6, whjc are of such width as that the opening through the outer end of the cylinder 3 is contracted to a slight degree when the portions of said cylinder between said slots are uniformly moved toward one another.
Arranged to simultaneously rotate and slide longitudinally upon the cylinder 3 is a sleeve 7, the outer end of which is contracted, as designated by 8, which outer end bears upon the outer portion of the cylinder 3, and the exterior surface of this sleeve 7 is preferably milled or corrugated, so that it maybe firmly grasped by the hand during manipulation. Formed through the rear portion of this sleeve 7 is a diagonally-disposed slot 9, the forward end of which terminates in a straight notch or recess 10, which is formed at right angles relative to the length of said sleeve.
The sight-piece for the forward end of the gun is carried by the attachment and comprises an elongated member 11, triangular in cross-section and provided at its forward end with an integral pin 12, which extends downwardly through the slot 9, and the lower end of said pin being screw-seated in the cylinder 3.
The rear end of the sight is bent downwardly immediately to the rear of the sleeve 7 and is rigidly secured to the cylinder 3 by means of a screw 13 or in any suitable man- I181.
When the parts of the attachment are assembled on the end of a gun-barrel, as shown, and the sleeve 7 is moved to its rearward limit of movement 11 on the cylinder 3, the contracted outer end 8 of said sleeve bears upon the portions of the cylinder 3 between the slots 6 therein, and thus the forward end of said cylinder 3 is contracted or choked, and as a result the charge from the gun re mains more compact and does not spread.
By making the sleeve 7 long enough to inclose the entire outer portion of the cylinder 3 and contracting the outer end of said sleeve the outer end of the cylinder 3, which is slotted, is held against expansion when the gun is fired, and the charge passes through the outer end of the cylinder.
When it is desired to open the choke attachment, so as to allow the charge to spread,
the sleeve 7 is manually engaged and twisted toward the right, which movement causes said sleeve to simultaneously rotate and move forwardly, owing to the inclination of the slot 9, and'this action disengages the con tracted end 8 of the sleeve 7 from the forward end of the cylinder 3, and the portions of said cylinder 3 between the slots 6 will move out ward to their limit of movement.
The elon ated member 11 forms a sight for the forwar end of the un, and the entire attachment is easily an uickly placed in osition upon or remove from the gungarrel.
- I claim 1. The combination with a gun-barrel, of a cylinder detachably secured to the end of the gun-barrel, the outer portion of which cylinder is provided with a series of radially-disposed iongitudinally-extending slcts, and a sleeve inclosing the entire slotted outer end of said cylinder and arranged to simultaneously slide and rotate thereon; substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a gunbarrel, of a c linder arranged upon the forward end I t ereof, the forward portion of which cylinder is'longitudinally slotted, a sleeve arranged to s de and rotate upon the cylinder, there being an inclined slot formed through said sleeve, and an elongated sight member fixed to the cylinder, and one end of which member passes through the slot'inthe sleeve;
substantlally as specified.
3. The combination with a gun-barrel, of a cylinder detachably secured to ,the outer end of the gun-barrel, the outer'portion of which cylinder is provided with a series of longitu- (finally-extending slots, a sleeve having its forward end contracted, and which sleeve is arranged to rotate and slide upon the cylinder, in which sleeve is formed a diagonallyarranged slot, and an elongated sight member fixed to the cylinder, one end of which passes through the slot in the sleeve; substantially as specified.
