To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrn. S. Isrnon, a citizen of the United States, residin at Newark,in the county of Essex and tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Frame Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates, generally, to improvements in frames for traveling and other bags, and locking devices therefor; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simplyconstructed looking or holding catch for bagframes, in which the locking or hold ing post or finger extending downwardly from the usual pivoted or hinged operating lever, is located at or near one of the longitudinally extending marginal edges of the top or upper surface of the catch box or casing, so as to readily cooperatewith correspondingly formed slits or opemngs, with which the hingedframe-sections of the bagframe are provided, to retain the said framesections in their closed relation.

As is well known, in the constructionof bag-frames two hinged or pivotally connected frame-sections are employed, the 1nner frame-section being quite narrow, and that the said narrow frame-section may be provided with a lock-post-receiving slot which is centrally disposed between the longitudinally extending marginal edges of said inner frame-section, the novel bagframe catch hereinafter more fully described has been devised.

The present invention, therefore, has as its principal object to provide a novel and simply-constructed bag-frame catch of the general character hereinafter set forth; and furthermore, to provide, in connection such catch, the outer and inner frame-sections with correspondingly disposed lock-post-receiving slots, arranged in the respective frame-sections that the latter are not weakened, and also that each frame-section has a continuous marginal edge, thereby providing a neater construction of frame, and enabling the omission of the usual hasps secured to the narrow inner frame-section by being riveted thereto.

Aside from the fact, that by the omission of the usual hasps, the cost of manufacture is reduced, the frame-sections have unobstructed marginal edge-portions, thus, when the bag has been opened, presenting no ob jectionable obstructions in which the lace on the sleeves of ladies garments, when the hand isthrust in the bag, can catch and become torn.

Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present lnvention.

With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily in the novel bag-frame catch hereinafter set forth; and, the said inven tion consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.

The invention is'clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which v Figure 1 is a top-face view of a bag-frame with its frame-sections represented in their closed relation, and showing in connection therewith, a pair of bag-frame: catches made according to and embodying the principles of the present inventio y Fig. 2 is a similar view, made on an enlarged scale, of the one endof the bagframe, the hinged frame-sections thereof'and the bag-frame catch being represented in an opened relation. v

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the two frame sections in their closed relation, and of the bag-frame fastener said section being represented as taken in a vertical plane through line 33 in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow X; and Fig. 4B is a transverse vertical sectional representation of the two frame-sections in their closed relation, and of the bag-frame catch in its locked engagement with the closed frame-sections.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of said above described views,

to indicate corresponding parts. Referring now to theseveral figures of the drawings, the referencecharacter 1 indicates the outer frame-section, and 2 theiinner frame-section of a bag-frame, said frame-sections being preferably right-angled in cross-section, as

The lock-post 0r finger 23 in this case is ,integrallyconnected with the "said platelike lever 14 at one of its marginal edgeportions, but it will'be clearly understood that the said lock-post or finger may be otherwise secured to said lever, it being essential, however, for the purposes of the present invention, that the said lock-post or finger is located at one side of the central longitudinal axis of thesaid'lever 14, or substantially near one of the marginal'edge portions of the said leverv 14, from which it extends vertically in a downward direction,

Furthermore, withthe bag-frame fasteners as made according'to the presentinven- 'tion, the usual hasps, riveted to the said frame-section'2, and projecting beyond the marginal edge of said frame-section, may be and areentirely omitted, thereby not only cheapening the cost ofconstructibn, but also doing away with obstructing projections, in which garments may catch and become torn.

Of course, I am fully aware that changes may be made in the general arrangements andcombinations of the several devices and )ection of the several. figures of parts, as well asjinthe details of the construction-ofthe said parts, without'departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth-in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto. Hence, 'I do no limit-my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the severaldevlces and parts as described'ln the sald specification, nor doI confine myself to the. exact details. of the construction of the said parts, "as illustrated in the accoml panying drawings.

I claim 1. In combination with the outer and inner frame-sections of a bag-frame, said inner frame-section being provided with a slot located centrally between the longitudinally extending marginal edges of said inner frame-section, and said outer frame-section being formed with a correspondingly located slot, a bag-frame fastener mounted upon said outer frame-section above the slot in said frame-section said fastener comprising a main shell provided in its upper face with a marginal slot, and a spring-controlled locking device comprising an actuating lever pivotally connected with said main shell, and a lock-post connected with said lever and extending vertically downwardly from one of the longitudinally extending marginal edge-portions of said lever into and being movably disposed in the slots of said shell and of the outer and inner frame-sections.

2. In combination with the outer and inner frame-sections of a bag-frame, said inner frame-section being provided with a slot located centrally between the longitudinally extending marginal edges of said inner frame-section, and said outer frame-section being formed with a correspondingly located slot, a bag-frame fastener mounted upon said outer frame-section above the slot in said frame-section, said fastener comprising a main shell provided in its upper face with a marginal slot and a locking device comprising an actuating lever pivotally connected with said main shell, said lever being provided at one of its longitudinal marginal edges with an inwardly bent and downwardly extending portion, and a lock-post connected with and extending vertically from said inwardly bent and downwardly extending portion into and through the marginal slot of said shell and the slots of said framesections.

3. In combination with the outer and inner frame-sections of a bag-frame, said inner frame-section being provided with a slot located centrally between the longitudinally extending marginal edges of said inner frame-section, and said outer frame-section being formed with a correspondingly located slot, a bag-frame fastener mounted upon said outer frame-section above the slot in said frame-section, said fastener comprising a main shell provided in its upper face with a marginal slot and a locking device comprising an actuating lever, a means of pivotel connection between said main shell and said lever, a spring secured within said shell, a stud extending from said means of pivotal connection in engagement with said spring, said lever being provided at one of its longitudinal marginal edges with an inwardly bent and outwardly extending portion, and a lock-post connected with and extending vertically from said inwardly bent and downwardly extending portion into and through the marginal slot of said shell and the slots of said frame-sections.
