UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-Ion.
GARDNER HOWLAND, OF BRUNSWICK, NEW YORK.
I IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SLOP-PAILS AND COMMODES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,999, dated March 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARDNER HOWLAND, of Brunswick, inthe county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented an Improved Slop-Pail and Oommode, of which the.
following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
The subject of my invention is a combined slop-pail and commode, made in two compartments, separated by a hinged partition or valve, the edge of Which is made to fit airtight, or suitably packed or luted to prevent the passage of effluvia.
General Description.
a the top or back of the pail, and is provided with a shoulder or offset, f, to catch into said top or back of the pail and retain the valve or gate in its'open or elevated position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The valve may be made airtight in various ways. In Fig. 2 I have shown at e a sheet, or it may bea ring, of rubber secured between two metallic plates, which form the said valve, and projecting beyond the edges of the said plates, and across the joint between them and the partition D, so as to form an air-tight hinge and a luting or packing. If preferred, it may be made tight by means of a waterseal formed by an upturned flange extending around the interior of the pail at its midheight, and adapted to hold water and to receive a downturned flange on the valve. The valve may be entirely detached, and made tight all round by either a luting or a waterseal, as above described. It may be operated by means of the rod, either with or without the hinge, the said rod being arranged in a more or less vertical position.
When water or slops are poured into the upper compartment a Waterjoint will be formed, and when the valve is raised the surplus water will be discharged into the lower compartment.
The upper edge of the pail is formed with a beveled flange, Gr, constituting a guard for a seat. The cover (3 is shown open in full lines, and closed in dotted lines, in Fig. 2.
Claims.
The followingis claimed as new:
1. The combined slop-pail and commode, constructed of two compartments, separated by a valved partition, and formed at top to serve as a seat, allsubstantially as herein set forth.
2. The partition D, separating the compartments A B, provided with a valve, E, packed around its edge, substantially'as set forth.
GARDNER HOWLAND.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM A. PETERS, EDGAR 0. HOWLAND.
