Application filed September 15, 1919. Seria1 No. 3 23,944.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MURPHY, a c ti zen or the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county 01: Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented anew and useful Improvement in 'Package-T1es, of
which the following is a specification.
r punched up from the body of the plate,
This invention relates to a bundle or pack-' age tie (If that type, consisting of ajmetal fastener to which one end of a cord or other flexible material is attached and so arranged that the other or :free end of the cord can he securely fastened, and doing away with the necessity of severing the cordwhen the bundle or package is tobeflopen'ed. The
chief object of this invention is to provide an improved, simple and inexpensive device of this character that may be readily manipulated and used repeatedly on all packages oi letters or other mail matter, thus saving a large expense for cord as now usedin the mail service. The above and other objects are attained in the preferred form of this invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings in tvhich- 1 Figure l is a plan view, Fig. is a lateral view, Fig. 3 is ahedge view from a point located at right angles to the .point of view of Fig. 1. 'Fig s. at and 5 are; views illustra'ting the manner of using the device.
My improved device for fastening bundles or packages comprises a flexible binding material such as cord, twine, tape or other similar material and a fastening part in the form of a plate made of metal or some other inflexible material.
The size and shape of the plate are shown in the illustration. I
The plate consists of a projection or arm (1) a perforation (2) for the reception of the cordwhich when knotted at the-extremity ,is prevented from slipping back, a'stud scribed turns.
and an arrow-headshapedcleat comprisin l V a shank connecting the head 5 of sai cleatiwith, the above described parts, said Specificationbf Letters Patent. Patent gg, 1921;
cleat also comprising lateral prongs or arms 8 forming notches 6+? for the reception of the binding material.
downwardly at an angle to said-plate.
The cleat part is somewhat elevated above the general plane f the plate, andits pointed end projecting I The use ofthis invention may readily be seen by referring to Figs. 4- and '5. "In applying thisinvention the plate is placedat the center of one surface of the package,
the cord is then carried around the package inthe direction shown by the arrow. After crossing the surface opposite to that upon securely held possible. V a I r To release the paekage it is merelyqie'ces sary to'revers'e the order-ofthe above de- Having thus described my invention what I claim is: r l l A package tie including a plate havingmeans for attachment o1 one end 01"" a flex-.
ible fastener, means to receive said fastener in ermediate its ends, and; an; arrow head shaped cleat having its narrow part resting above the plane of the plate and its pointed end projecting downwardly. at an angle to} said plate.
