FISHING-SIGNAL.
Application filed June 24, 1916.
sion of a signal adapted for use in c0njunction with fishing lines, to give both a visible and audible signal upon a fish being hooked.
It is in general the object of the present invention to simplify the structure and improve the efiiciency of devices of this character, and to facilitate the readiness with which such devices may be secured in desired positions.
It is a more specific object of the invention to provide such a signal device wherein the audible signal member comprises a spherical bell member of conventional type, and wherein the slot of the bell member coacts with the holding means of the signal, to procure a maximum simplicity of parts.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention resides more articularly in the novel combination, arrangement and formation 01 parts more particularly hereinafter pointed out and described in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the improved signal device in set position with the signal member shown in released position in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the head member of the signal is formed.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved signal device comprises a head member formedof a single strip of material having one end bent to form a sleeve 6 fixedly receiving one end of an attaching spike 7. The major portion of this strip comprises a finger 8 extending laterally from the spike 7 and the free end of this finger is directed laterally and formed to provide a series of stepped Specification of Letters Patent.

shoulders 9. Adjacent the sleeve 6 the plate is provided with an extension 10 projecting away from the spike and adapted for the securement thereto of one end of a spring strip 11 by means or lateral flange portions 12 on said projection bent about the strip. Secured to the free end of the strip is a spherical bell member 13 of conventional type provided with the usual slot 14 and the securement of the bell to the strip is at a point diametrically opposite said slot whereby one end of the slot may selectively engage one or the stepped shoulders 9 to "thus hold the bell adjacent the finger by reason of the outward resilient pressure of the spring.
F or releasing the bell an angular trigger piece 15 is provided which is pivoted at its angle to the intermediate portion of the tin ger 8 and which has one end adapted to engage the bell to detach it from the finger and which has its other end adapted for securement of a fishing line 16 or other actuating member. Thus upon pulling the line 16, the bell will be released and will spring upwardly to thus give an audible and visible signal.
The attaching spike 7 is relatively long and thin and thus is adapted for ready at tachment to any object in the various positions in which it is desired to set the signal member.
Although the signal member has been described as particularly in connection with a fishing line, it is however, apparent that the use oil. the signal member is by no means limited in this respect and that various uses may be found for the device.
Particularly in connection by use of the device as a fishing signal, however, the adjustable holding means afforded by the series of shoulders 9 is valuable, as in using the device in comparatively rough water, a more secure holding of the signal member against release is desirable than when the device is used in still water.
We claim:
1. A signal device comprising an attaching member, a spring strip connected at one end with the attaching member, a finger connected with the attaching member, a shoulder on the finger and a spherical slotted bell member carried at the other end of the spring strip and having one end of its slot adapted for abutting engagement with the shoulder.
2. A signal device comprising a plate hav ing one end bent to form a sleeve, an attaching spike fixedly secured in said sleeve, a shoulder at the other end of the plate, a spring strip secured to the plate adjacent said sleeve and means carried by the other end of the spring strip for abutting engagement With said shoulder.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing We have hereunto set our hands at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Vfisconsin.
