Description

J. DITSON.
CAPSTAN.
APPLICATION FILED S EPT.27, 1920.
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
ATT NEY INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE DITSON, OF LITTLETON, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR TO INGERSOLL-RAND COMPANY, JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JER- SEY.
CAPSTAN.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
Application filed September 27, 1920. Serial No.- 412,953.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JEssE DITSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Littleton, Arapahoe county, Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Capstans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a power driven capstan and the primary objects of the invention are to secure a simple and eflicient capstan without projections or outside structure to interfere with or tangle the rope and furthermore, to provide a capstan in which the gearing and driving connections, located in the base, are thoroughly protected from the weather.
Further objects will hereinafter appear and to all of these ends the invention is shown in one of its preferred forms in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of a capstan showing so much of the apparatus as will serve to illustrate the invention, and
ent invention, they have not been shown and need not be described. The base casting A as shown, is provided with the vertical stem C which 'is preferably hollow, and connected to the base by the web D. An upwardly extending protective flange E, formed on the base, surrounds the lower portion of the stem and cooperates with the capstan drum F in the manner to be described.
The capstan drum F has its bearings at the points G and H on the stem C and is provided at its outer lower rim J with an internal groove K forming a lip L extending over the upper edge 0 of the flange E for protecting the interior of the capstan.
Flg. 2 is a transverse sectional view partly.
Suitable driving connections are provided in the base and in this instance, the drivin shaft P-is supported in the ball-bearings and R in the frame S. A pinion T on the driving shaft P meshes with a gear U on the counter shaft V having ball-bearings W and X in the frame S and provided with a pin- 10n Y meshing with the internal gear Z on the inside of the lower portion of the capstan drum F. Any other suitable driving connections could be provided for the drum. A cap a is adapted to be secured to the end of the stem 0 over the drum as by means of the bolt 6 and an oiling aperture 0 1s provided in the cap.
Any motorprovided for the apparatus in the base casting and the gearing in said castmg, are thoroughly protected from the weather, and the base of the casting may be filled with oil so that all wearing parts except the capstan drum bearings, run in oil, leaving but one place, that is, the oiling operture c in the cap a of the structure, to be occasionally oiled.
I claim:
1. A power driven capstan comprising a .base casting adapted to house a motor and provided with a hollow stem and an upwardly extending flange surrounding the base of the stem, a capstan drum having bearings on said stem and provided with a groove beneath its outer lower rim extending over the upper edge of said upwardly extending flange on the base casting for protecting the interior of the capstan, and
operative connections within the base casting tor driving said capstan drum.
2. A power driven capstan comprising a base adapted to contain a motor and provided with a stem and an upwardly extending flange surrounding the base of the stem,
a capstan drum mounted for rotation on said.
stem and having a lip at its lower rim adapted to extend over the said upwardly extending flange on the base for protecting the interior of the capstan, and operative driving connections within the base.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
JESSE DITSON.
