IMPRovEM'EN-r IN SEWING-MACHINE covERs.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GULLIN W. REED, of Chagrin Falls, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding-Covers for Sewing-Machines, of which the followin g is a specification: v
This invention relates to an improvement in sewing-machine tables possessing hinged or folding covers for forming an extension of the table proper; and it consists principally in the provision of a cover composed of two end panels hinged tothe table, and provided with two hinged side panels and a hin ged top-plate, said parts being so arranged in relation to each other that the end panels are capable of being folded onto the table-top, and the side panels turned inwardly upon the end panels for forming a smooth unbroken surface for the proper delivery of the work, and so as not to interfere with the same, the top-plate of the cover being left in a pendent position at the side of the table; or it may be turned under one of the side panels. The invention also consists in so constructing a'sewing-machine cover that one of the end panels and two sectional sides can be turned flush or even with the table-top,wl1i1e theother panels constituting the remaining end portion, sides, and top are rigidly connected to each oth er so that when turned down for exposing the machine they will form a casing or hood for the reception of the work and a lamp, a reflector being applied to the inner side of the cover for throwing the rays of light directly upon the work, while the side panels prevent the lateral diii'usion of the light, thus protecting the eyes of the operator.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view representing the cover in a position forv ,protecting the operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cover when unfolded for forming an extension of theh table. Fig. 3 is a modification of my invention illustrating a cover forming a work and lamp case or recep tacle.
The letter A designates the table and frame proper of a sewing-machine, which may be of any preferred construction.v The cover for protecting the operative mechanism when not in use is composed of two end panels, B C, which are connected to the table Aby suitablehin ges, and are provided with side panels, consisting of two sections or plates, F G, which are connected to the end panels by a suitable hinge or hinges. The cover I is hinged to one of the end panels, and may be either of a curved 'or arched form, in which event it is retained in a pendent position at the side of the table when the cover is unfolded; or it may be made plane or straight, and combined with hinges permitting its insertion between one of the end sections and side panels. The cover, when the constituent plates are relatively arranged, as shown in Fig. 1, performs its legitimate function of protecting the operative mechanism,
and differs in external appearance not materially from ordinary covers. The end sections are folded upon the surface of the table in an outward direction from the operative mechanism, while the side panels are folded or turned inwardly upon the end panels so that their contiguous edges shall meet each other in the center for forming a smooth unbroken surface, oerin g no obstruction to the free passage of the work. The ends of the cover when unfolded project or extend from the table proper, thus forming an extension or prolongation thereof without the necessity of employing detachable or separate extension leaves.
A modiiication of my invention is represent ed in Fig. 3, in which A designates the table, and B the left-hand end panel of the cover with its two hingedside panels, F Gr, constructed and operating in exactly the same manner as above described. The right-hand end pair el is hinged or connected to the table as pre viously stated; but instead of connecting the side panels and top-plate to the same by hinges, said parts are made rigid or integral with each other, so that when the cover is turned into the position shown in Fig. 8 the righthand section will be in the form of a box or case, which is designed for the reception of the work and of a lamp. A reflector, L, for properly throwing the light upon the operative mechanism, is applied or secured to the inner surface of the cover; and as all lateral diffusion of the light is prevented by the reflector and side panels of the cover, the eyes of the operator are not subjected to the action of the light.
I claim as my invention- 1. A sewingmacliine cover possessing two hinged end panels adapted to be turned upon the surface of the...table in opposite directions, and provided with hinged or sectional side panels'bapable of being folded inwardly upon the end panels, as shown and described.
2. A sewing-machine cover comprising a hinged end sect-ion provided with rigid sides and cover, anda hinged end panel possessing folding side sections, as herein shown and described.
3. A sewing-machine cover provided with a relector applied vto its inner surface, as and for the purpose set forth. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of January, 187 3.
