Description

J., W. CHENEY.
Sewing-Machine Tables.
@maturi .SUNrrED S'rAfrEs A'rENr OFFICE JAMES W. CHENEY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHlNE TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,701, dated March 11, 1873.
To all whom it muy concern:
Be it knownthat I, JAMES W. CHENEY, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine Tables; and
A I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the same, rei'- erence being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part ot this specitication.
This invention has for its object to furnish a simple and eective method of connecting the cover of a sewing-machine tablel to the p also consists in the provision ota hinged suplviorting-arm, applied to a pendent bracket secured to the table for maintaining the cover in its proper positionwhen used as an extension leat', and a pair ot spring-jaws for securing the hinged arm when it is turned into a vertical or inoperative position.
In the drawing, Figure lis a side elevation ot' a sewing-machine table and cover applied tothe edgeof the same. Fig. 2 is a top view ot' 'the table with the cover removed; and Fig. 3 represents, in detail, the hinges for connectin g the cover to the table.
The table A is of the usual construction, and has attached to its under side and at its edge a pair of plates, B, which possess an elongated slot, C, and openings D, for the passage of fastening-screws, &c.
The cover L is susceptible ot' being applied to its legitimate use for protecting the operative mechanism of the machine, and when the latter is in use it is capable ot' being ap- Y plied to the edge of the table to form a prolongation or extension leaf thereof.
For effecting this result I apply to the under side of the top of the cover a pair of plates, D, which are formed with curved or downwardly-projecting ends E, adapted for insertion into the slotted plates attached to the table. Said plates project through openings formed at the junction of the top with one ofthe sides of the cover, and areattached to the same by means of internal or invisible screws, or other fastening devices not extending through the top of the cover. A vertical flange, F, is formed on the plates D by cutting or slitting the plate and then bending the cut portion in a downward direction, said ange serving as a medium for securing the plate to the side ofthe cover. Apendent bracket, Gr, is secured to the under side ot' the table by means of an upper iiange and screws, and to the lower extremity ot' said bracket is connected,.by means ot' a hinge or pivot joint, an arm, H, which is capable of being turned at an angle to the bracket or parallel therewith.
The cover is applied to the table for forming an extension thereof by inserting the hooked ends ot' the plates D into the slotted plates B attached to the table, and by reason ot' the curved or peculiar shape of the connecting-hooks the lower part of the cover is capable of being thrown outward when the arm His turned down to support the same,
thus causing the upper end ofthe cover to be turned inward or in contact with the edge of the table, for forming a tlush or even surface.
The casual disengagement of the cover is rendered impossible by the slightly horizontally-turned lower ends of the connectinghooks, 'which prevent all vertical movement of the cover, unless the hinged supporting.- arm is previously turned into an inoperative position, when the lower part of the cover is susceptible of being turned toward the tablethe curved sha-pe of the connecting-hooks permitting such a movement to a suiicient degree for enabling the same to be disengaged.
A fastening device constructed as described possesses also the advantage of permitting a sufcient movement of the cover so as to remove all strain from the curved fastening -hook and recessed plate, obviating breakage by accident or in unfastenin g, when the supporting-arm is turned up, which would be an inevitable result if the connection between the cover and table were rigid.
Having thus described 'my invention, what 2 leeg-m1 I claim es new, and desire to secure by Letters of'` e sewingmechine arranged as described, Patent-,is- Iehe hinged supporting-arm H, bracket G,
1. The plates D B, provided, respectively, spring-jaws Kor equivalent device, as and for with a pendent curved hook and a receivingthe purpose specified.
slot, when applied to the cover and table of a JAMES W. CHENEY. Sewingmaehine, for the purpose and in the Witnesses: manner specified. Gr. C. REED,
2. In combination with the cover and table EBENEZER CHENEY.
