IMPROVEMENT IN TEA-KETTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,576, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHAUNOEY D. IVOOD- RUFF, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tea-Kettles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the acconmanying drawing making a part of this specitication,inwhich Figure l is a perspective view of myimproved kettle. Fi 2 is a vertical central section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ear detached.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
As ordinarily constructed, the parts of a tea-kettle most liable to corrosion and injury arising therefrom are the ears to which the bail is hinged, and the contiguous portions of the cover, and the opening inclosed by the same.
To render these points as durable as are other parts of the device is the design of my invention, which consists, principally, in protecting the rim of the cover and the edge of the opening inclosed thereby by means of rum-corrosive metal, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified. It consists, further, in the-peculiar construction of the bail-ear and its attachment to or upon the kettle-breast, substautiall y as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a kettle of usual form, provided upon or within its breast with an opening, 15, which is inclosed by means of acover, 0. The edge of the metal of the opening B is inclosed by means of a strip of zinc, l), or other suitable nm-corrosive metal, which is doubled over said edge and soldered upon the upper and lower sides of the metal plate that forms the breast. The rim 0 of the cover 0 is also formed of or from zinc,orits equivalent; and, if desired, the edge of said cover may be protected in the same manner as in case of the edge of the opening B. As seen in Fig. 2,
the ears E are each constructed of or from two pieces of metal, which are folded together and combined in the same manner as are sheets of writing-paper. The folded ends of the pieces 0 and 0 being uppermost, the ends of the outer piece 0 are turned outward horizontally in opposite directions so as to furnish a bearing for the ear upon the upper side of the breast, while the ends of the inner piece 0 are passed through a corresponding slot provided in said breast, and then turned outward in opposite directions against the lower side of the same, so as to lock said our in place. From the breast upward the pieces 0 and c are secured together, while their angular ends are fastened to said breast, and the opening through the same closed by means of solder. Suitable openings are provided in and through the upper ends of the ears for the passage of the rivets F, upon which the bail G is pivoted or hinged.
For use of the trade, the ears would be constructed in the form shown in Fig. 3, and, while as easily attached as are any new in use, would possess greater strength and durability.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1. In a tea-kettle, an inclosing-strip of 'noncorrosive metal applied to and embracing the edge of the eover opening or of the cover, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a tea kettle, a cover having its rim constructed of or from non-corrosive metal, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
3. The ears E, constructed as shown, and
capable of being combined with a kettle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
