IMPROVEMENT IN PHYSICIANS SADDLE-BAGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 112,819, dated March 21, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW M. LESLIE, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis `and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Physicians Saddle- Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters ofreference marked thereon.

Figure l represents an end and part-sectional elevation of the bags, one side being shown packed or closed, and the other partly open and wholly in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bags. Fig. 3 is a plan of part of the strap or pla-te to which the bags are attached, and Fig. 4 a plan view of the pattern-piece out of which the cases are formed.

My invention consists in so cutting or forming and so applying a plate of leather to the metallic cases of saddle-bags employed for containing medicines and other articles that, while inclosing and protecting said cases, it forms the hinge between them, enabling convenient and ready access to be had to the interior of the cases, as hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawing, A indicates the strap to which the cases are attached. The

- cases B B are formed from the pattern-piece shown in Fig. 4, the full lines indicating cut edges and the dotted lines folded edges. The central scalloped portion of the edge is that through which rivets are passed to attach the cases to the strap A, as shown in Fig. 1. The flaps are folded so as to inclose the metallic cases D Dl on the sides and form the hinge c between them.

'lhe metal cases D D are formed of sheet metal, and each provided with a bottom, d. The strap A forms, at a, a cover for the upper case, B, and the bottom of said case forms a cover for the lower one, B. The end a of the strap is provided with a metal lock-plate, E. and is secured to the lower case, B', by means of a turn-bolt, E, in the manner common in inventions of this or analogous character.

The cases B B are strengthened on their fronts by metal plates cl c2, attached by means of rivets. Metal plates c3 are likewise similarly attached to the ends of the upper case, B, at its lower edge, so as to cover and protect the adjacent part of. the lower case, B. Thus constructed, ready access may be had to either case when the bags stand upright, or even whenthe strap is not secured by the turnbolt. The bags may be carried on the arm or on horseback with little or no danger of spilling their contents. Their cost and weight are also reduced to a minimum, while a finished and ornamental appearance is preserved.

I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent- A physicians saddle -bag formed of two cases, B B', hinged at C by the central uncut portion of the leather cover piece C, having the form shown, and the cuts or divisions c f 6 f t In testimony of fsaid invention I have hereunto set my hand in presence of witnesses.
