Description

H. R. LYUNS.
UNDERGARMENT.
APPLICATION FILED 0503,1912.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
UNl'lED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRIET R. LYONS, OF HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE WILLIAM CARTER COMPANY, OF NEEDHAM HEIGHTS, MASSACHUSETTS, A. CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
UN DERGARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application filed December 3, 1917. Serial No. 205,121.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRIET R. LYoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of l/Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wearing apparel and it is the principal object of the invention to provide an under garment or bodice especially designed for use by women and adapted to be worn beneath the corsets whereby the body will be shielded from the corsets, thus preventing the rubbing or abrasion of the flesh of the wearer.
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide a garment of the character mentioned which is of novel and attractive design and which will eliminate any bunglesome effect about the legs of the wearer.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a bodice having means thereon to permit engagement of the same with the hose supporting garters of a wearer in order that the same will be prevented from moving upwardly and gradually exposing the flesh to the abrasive action of the corsets.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings 2- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved garment, and,
Fig. 2 is a fragmental side elevation of the same applied.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, the improved garment includes a body enveloping portion or shirt 1 having openings in the top thereof for receiving the arms and shoulders of the wearer through the same. The lower portion of the shirt 1 is extended as indicated by the nu meral 2 and has its ends cut in a curved manner as indicated by the numeral 3 to provide a plurality of extensions or tongues 6. Button holes or similar openings 4 are formed in the extensions or tongues 6 and are adapted to receive the stud of a garter 7 over which the clasp is subsequently engaged to secure the extension and hose in position or other hose supporter therethrough. In this way, it will be readily understood that the extension 2 of the shirt 1 will be prevented from gradually moving upward with relation to the body of the wearer and after a time exposing the flesh to the abrasive action of the corsets and garters. By curving the lower end of the shirt extension as indicated by the numeral 3, it will be also understood that the sam'ewill readily conform to the body of a wearer, thus preventing the same from becoming bunglesome and undesirable when used for a length of time.
My invention is not limited to the use of a plurality of tab-like extensions at each of the opposite sides, since within the scope of the invention and claim, but a single tablike extension may be employed at each side.
The extension 2 is of a length suflicient to fully cover that portion of the body about which the corsets are worn, although, in this connection, it will be understood that the length of the same may be varied, such as conditions or preference may dictate, in so long as the same serves as an effectual shield for the body of a person against the rubbing or abrasive action of the corsets.
Manifestly, the construction and design shown are capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim I As an article of manufacture, a bodice comprising a body portion adapted to be worn beneath the corset and having tab-like extensions at the opposite sides only of said body portion, said tab like extensions being adapted to underlie garters and being of sufficient length and width fully to protect an adjacent limb therefrom, and being provided with buttonholes for detachably engaging the stubs of said garters for maintaining the body portion of said bodice against wrinkling or creeping up beneath the corset.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.
