Be it known that I, CHARLES H. GILL; a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the countyA of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Washable Garter, of which the following is a specifica-tion. f

My invention relates to garters of the type wherein a resilient band encircles the 1o leg below the knee and above the calf of the leg and has a part extendlng downwardly from said band and provided with means for gripping and holding the hose, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a garter of such construction as to have the required or desirablereslliency to retain its place on the leg without binding the muscles and without employing the elastic webbing band ordinarily used for this purpose; second, to provide a garter whereof the portions which come into contact with the skin of the leg may be made of material that may be washed without injury; third, to provide a garter having resilient means; hose gripping means and fastening and adjusting lmeans all readily removable from the garter proper or cloth portion, so that said garter proper may be separately laundried; fourth, to provide a combined fastening and adjusting means for the said garter; and; fifth, to provide means whereby the said combined fastening and adjusting means and the hose gripping means are kept from coming into direct contact with the skin of the user.

I attain these objects by means ofthe construction illustrated in the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the whole garter; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of a portion of the gar-l ter proper and of the fastening, adjusting and resilient means thereof; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and

Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

stantially inelastic material; such as cloth or the like, is provided with a widened portion 12 terminates at its unconnected end in a pocket 13 formed by doubling over the end of said wide portion 12 and sewing along the doubled edges with stitches 14.

5 A plate 15 is provided with slots 16 and 17 cut through it and of such length A band 11 of flexible, washable and subtion 12 at one of its ends and the wide por-v as to permit the band 11 to pass through them. One end of the plate 15 is adapted to it into the pocket 13 and nearly all of lthe balance of the plate 15 has the widened 60 portion 12 of the band 11 behind it. The band 11 passes up through the slot 16 in the plate 15 and down through the slot 17 in the plate 15 and is adapted to continue thence around the leg of the user and to be then fastened resiliently to the plate 15 by means vof the compression orvfrictional fastener 20.

A spring 1 8, preferably or wire bent in a series of sharp angles or zigzags to lie flat against'the plate 15, is secured at and' near one of its ends to the plate 15 by means of rivets 19 or other suitable fastening means; or a short section of rubber may be employed in place of spring 18. A compression or frictional fastener or buckle 20 is secured to the spring 18 or the section of rubber aforesaid at Aitsy end opposite from the rivets 19. Since such fasteners or buckles are old in the art, may beV of any several constructions and are not claimed by me as my invention; itl will be unnecessary to describe this fastener in detail in this speciication.

The end of the band 11 opposite from its 85 widened end 12 is adapted to pass through this fastener or buckle 20 to a point where sufficient tension of the band 11 upon the leg is secured by drawing out the spring 1S and is then secured by the gripping of the fastener or buckle 20. Y

A shaped part 21; of similar materialV to that of the band 11, is secured to the band 11l by means of stitches 22 and terminates downwardly in a narrow portion 22. The free end of the narrow portion 22 is doubled over to form a pocket 30 by means of stitches 31 along its doubled edges.

A plate 23 having a widened portion 23 near its upper end has slots 24 and 25 through this widened portion 23 The nar- -row portion 22 of the part 21 is adapted to 29 is secured to the plate 23 and is adapted to coact with the hose gripping member 28.

A set of these garters consists of two each of the plates 15, with their associated attaching, fastening, adjusting and resilient means, and of the plates 23, with their attaching and hose gripping means and of four or more of the cloth or similar material parts. Thus, two of these washable cloth parts may be in process of laundrying while the other two are being worn.

To prepare a new or cleansed garter for use, the wide portion12 of the cloth part is doubled over to conform to the length of the slots 16 and 17 and is passed forwardly through the slot 17 and downwardly or rearwardly through the slot 16 and drawn through these slots until all of the wide portion 12 is through and enough of the main portion of the band 11 to permit of inserting the end of the plate 15 in the pocket 13. The band 11 is then pulled back through the slots 16 and 17 as far as permitted by the engagement of the end of the plate 15 and the pocket 13. The end of the narrow part 22 of the appendage 21 is passed from the rear through the slot 24 in the plate 23 and then back through the slot 25 and drawn through those slots far enough to permit of inserting the lower end of the plate 23 in the pocket 30. The narrow part 22 is then pulled back through the slots 24 and 25 as -far as permitted by the engagement of the pocket 30 with the end of the plate 23.

To 'adjust the garter upon the leg, the band 11 is passed around the leg and through the fastener or buckle 20. The band 11 is pulled through the said fastener until the spring 18 is sufliciently extended to give the desired pressure against the leg to the band 11 and is then fastened in that position. Thus, the garter may be adjusted to legs of varying diameters and to varyingtastes as to snugness of lit or pressure de-q sired. rl

The hose are gripped and held between the button 29 on the plate 23 and the hose gripping member 28 in the ordinary and well known manner.

While I have described and illustrated a specific and preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be evident that numerous departures from the construction herein described might be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. I do not, therefore, limit my claims to the specilic construction shown.

I claim:

1. In a washable garter, the combination of a leg band of washable, flexible and substantially inelastic material provided with a pocket at one of its ends, a plate of metal or other. material adapted to have one of its ends fit into the said pocket and provided with two slots near its opposite end through which the said leg band is adapted to pass, a spring secured at one of its ends to the said plate and carrying a fastening member at its opposite end and a downwardly depending portion of said garter permanently attached to said leg band and provided with a hose gripping member adapted to be attached to or detached from the said portion of said garter at will. 2. In a washable garter, the combination of a leg band constructed throughout of washable, flexible and inelastic material and having no permanently secured parts or attachments of differing material, a plate adapted to be secured to or removed from the said leg band at will, a resilient member having one of its ends secured to the said plate, a fastening member carried by the free end of the said resilient member, a hose supporting member permanently secured to the said leg band and constructed throughout of washable, flexible and inelastic material, with no permanently secured parts or attachments of differing material, a hose gripping plate adapted to be secured to or removed from the free end of the said hose supporting member at will, and a locking member secured to the said hose gripping plate and adapted to Vcoact with the said plate to secure the hose firmly tothe said hose supporting member.

In a washable garter, the combination of a leg band and a hose supporting pendant secured thereto, both being Vconstructed throughout of washable, flexible and Sub-'100 stantially inelastic material and having no permanently secured parts or attachments of differing material, a widened end part of the said leg band, a pocket formed in the said widened end part, a plate adapted to lit partly into the said pocket and to be secured to the said widened end of the said leg band at will in such manner as to be prevented by the said leg band from contacting with the adapted to be removed from thesaidpocket and from the said leg band at will, a resilient member having one of its ends secured to the said plate, a narrower end of said legV band, a fastening member carried by the free end of the said resilient member and adapted to securethe said narrower endof i' the said leg band to the said resilient mein` ber at whatever point on the said narrower end of the said leg band will bring about the desired-tension of the saidresilient member, a second pocket formed'in the free end of the said hose supporting pendant, a second plate adapted to partly fit into the said second pocket and to be secured thereto at will in such manner that said second plate willy be prevented from contacting with the person of the user by the said hose supporting Y pendant and; adapted to be removed from said second pocket and from said hose supperson of the user and 1710 porting pendant at will, a button carried by said second plate, and a hose gripping member hingably secured to the said second plate and adapted to engage with the button to secure the hose firmly to the said hose supporting pendant.

4. In a Washable garter, the combination of a garter member consisting of a leg band portion and one or more pendant portions and of Washable, inelastic and flexible material, pockets formed in the said leg band and pendant portions, attaehable members adapted to be slipped into or out of said pockets and to be thus secured to or separated from the said garter member at Will, a resilient element carried by one of said attachable members, a fastening element vcarried by the said resilient element, and fastening elements carried by the others of said attachable members.

5. In a Washable garter, the combination of a Washable, inelastic'l and wholly flexible garter member, a resilient member, fastening members, and means for wholly disassoeiating the said garter member from al1 of the other said members at will.

6. In a washable garter, the combination of a cloth garter member, a resilient member, fastening members, land means for disassooiating all of the other said members from the said garter member at will so that the remainder of said garter member is Wholly Washable cloth.
