Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILLIP DIEHL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MAGIC LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,142, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, PHILLIP DIEHL, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Magic Lantern for Advertising Purposes; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a plan of the rotating cord-ring, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
tisement or subject illustrated without being obliged to open the. lamp for the purpose. The invention consists in a magic lantern of circular form, having a downward and laterally projecting lens-tube with a circular frame rotating about the collar of the lamp, said frame being provided with receptacles or hold-v ers for the slides, and is rotated back and forth by means of an endless cord coiled around the sleeve of the frame, so as to bring each slide successively into the anterior focal plane of the lens-tube, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
1 In the drawing, Arepresents the cylindrical case of the magic lantern; B is the tube fitted with a lens, 0; D is a lamp; and E'is the reflector, all arranged as shown in Fig. 1, and the invention of which I do not claim. F is .of one strip and a light skeleton frame connected by ribs 0 to a sleeve, 1), which encircles the collar of the lamp. The frame is-composed of two hoops of wire, connected at regular intervals by light metallic strips d, on each of which is a pair of outwardly-turned clips, 0. Between the clip that of the adjacent one is slipped a glass slide, having painted on it the advertisement or illustration designed to be illuminated in an enlarged form upon the sidewalk, which will then be in the anterior focal plane of the lens, when the frame is revolved so as to bring said slide coincident with the opening of the lens-tube. Around the sleeve b of the slide-frame several turns of a cord, Gr, are coiled, its ends being carried through two openings in the side of the base of the lanterncase and united. The frame being filled with slides painted and lettered as desired, and the lamp lit, the device may be placed in front of the place of business, so as to throw an image upon the sidewalk. Each slide, by pulling on either part of the cord and rotating the slide-frame, is successively caused to come into the focal plane, and" to throw its image upon the ground, which thus attracts the attention of the passers-by, and accomplishes the advertisers object. Where a dead wall is convenient, the images may be cast upon it; in this case, the circular form of the lantern is retained, but the tube is caused to project from it at or above the horizontal plane.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The construction and arrangement, with relation to a magic lantern, of the revolving slide-frame F and cord G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
