Dec. W. L. SKEEN ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed OCL. l3 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet l Filed Oct. 15, 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 citizen of the United Patented net. 29, 1925.
NITED STATES, PATENT ornca.
WALTER Il- BKEEN, OF LOB 'ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Application filed October 13, 1924. Serial Ho. 743,328.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER L., SKEEN, a States residing at Los Angeles, in the county of lbcs Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising devices.
It is an object of this invention to pro ,Vide an advertising device having a circular upon which pictures or written matter may be printed, and which has a light for projecting the pictures or written matter upon a screen which may be opaque or translucent, as desired.
A further object of this invention is to provide means for rotating the circular film, which means will be operated by the ascending air which will be caused to rise because of the heat imparted thereto by the light used for projecting the pictures of the film upon the screen.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which .will be made manifest in the following detaileddescription and pointed out in the appended claims reference is had to the accom anying drawings for an illus-' trative embo ment of the invention, wherem:
Figure l'is a top plan view of the improved advertisin device,
Fig. 2 is side e evation of the improved advertising device,
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1,
F1 4 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3,
F i 5 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showin the proved advertising device in applie position. 1 a
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar arts throughout, the improved advertising evice consists of a tubular support 10' which may be formed of sheet metal and have recesses 11 formed adjacent the bottom thereof so as to form legs 12 permitting air to readily enter the tubular support 10 through the recesses 11. A
A reflecton 19 which may be a concave mirror is also mounted upon the spider 13 by means of a bracket 20. Adjacent the top of the tubular support 10 a second spider 21 is mounted which may be formed of diametrical cross pieces 22 and which carries an adjustable screw 23 having a pointed upper end 24. A socket shaped member 25 rests upon the point 24 and carries a plurality of blades 26 constituting a fan for the device.
which preferably extends downwardly over the tubular support 10 is mounted upon the ends of the blades 26 and carries a plurality of threaded radial arms 28. Hangers 29 depend downwardly from the ends of the arms 28 and are adjustable thereon by means .of lock nuts 30. The lower ends of the hangers 29 carry spring clips 31 for releasably holding the circular film F, which may be formed of any suitable material and may have any suitable pictures or indicia printed thereon. Channel shaped members 32 are mounted upon the upper and lower edges of the film F and serve to protect the edges of the film.
A tubular member 33 is mounted over an opening 34 formed in the side of the tubular support 10 by means of rivets 35. A second tu ular member 36 is adapted to telescope Within the tubular member 33 and is formed in two sections 37 and 38, which are secured together in spaced relation to each other by a suitable plate or bracket 39, thus providing an opening 40 throu h which the film F is adapted to pass. i suitable lens 4I is mounted within a. ring 42 which is threaded into the second tubular member 36 so as to provide adjustment. Upon the outer end of the section 38 of the tubular member 36 a. third tubular member 43 is telescopically mounted, which carries a lens 44. A suitable spindle 45 is journaled in a downwardly bent portion 46 of the first tubular member 33 and is adapted to carry a pinion 47 engageable upon a rack 48 carried by the second tubular member 36.
The films F may be of variable diameter and therefore the hangers 29 which support the film are adjustable upon the arm 28 by means of the lock nuts 30. Because of the variable diameters of the films, the second tubular member 36 and the elements carried thereby are adjustable by, means of the pinion 47 and the rack 48, enabling the opening 40 to be adjusted so as tov accommodate the film F. A focus for the device is provided by adjusting the lens 41 forwardly or backwardly by rotating the ring 42 in which the lens is retained. The lens 44 may be also adjusted by sliding the tubular member 43 forwardly or backwardly upon the forward section 38 of the second tubular member 36.
An important feature of the invention is rovided in the means for rotating the film F. The light 17 which projects the material upon the film F upon the screen S heats the air within the tubular support 10 which causes the air to rise therewithin. The continuously ascending air engages upon and actuates the fan provided by the blades 26 causing the fan to slowly rotate and carry the film therewith. Cold air may enter through the recesses 11, become heated by the light 17 and cause the rotation of the film F to be continuous. The socket shaped member 25 together with the point 24: provides a bearing for the fan which is practically frictionless, so that the slight movement of the ascending air is sufiicient to rotate the fan.
As shown in Fig. 6, to be used in connection with a screen This may be either an opaque screen or it may be translucent, such as ground glass, so that the device may be placed in a store the device is adapted window and pedestrians passing by may see the advertisement upon the reverse side of the screen S by looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
It will be understood that various changes in the detail of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:

An advertising device comprising a tubular support, a light mounted within said support, a reflector associated with said light, a pair of lenses adjustably mounted upon the side of said support through which said reflector is adapted to direct light, a fan pivoted upon said support adapted to be actuated by the ascending said support, and a circular film carried by said fan adapted to pass between said lenses.
2. An advertising device comprising a support, a light mounted in said support, a
heated air within fan mounted upon said support adapted to be rotated by the ascending heated air within said support, radial arms carried by said fan, hangers adjustably mounted upon said arms, an endless film and spring clips car-' ried by said hangers for releasably holding said film, and lenses associated with said light and film for projecting pictures carried by said film upon. a screen.
3. An advertising device comprising a tubular support, a light mounted within said support, a fan mounted adjacent the top of said support and adapted to be rotated by the ascending heated air within said support, a circular film carried by said fan, a tubular member mounted upon the side of said support, a second tubular member telescopically mounted upon the first tubular member and having an opening formed therein through which said circular film is adapted to pass, a lens adjustably mounted in said second tubular member, a third tubular member carrying a second lens telescopically mounted upon the second tubular member, and means for adjusting said secon tubular member and elements carried thereby relatively to the first tubular member.
4. An advertising device comprising a- S. tubular support, a light disposed withinv the support, a spider mounted upon said support adjacent the top thereof, a fan rotatably mounted upon said spider above said support, radial arms carried by said fan extending beyond the sides of the support,
hangers carried upon said arms, a circular film supported by said hangers, and means including lenses associated with the light for projecting the film upon a screen.
5. An advertising device comprising a tubular support, a light disposed-within the support, a spider mounted u on said support adjacent the top thereo a fan rotatably mounted upon said spider above said support, radial arms carried by said fan extending beyond the sides of said support, hangers adjustableupon said arms, a circular film' supported by said hangers, and means including an adjustable lens associated with the light for projecting the film upon a screen.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
