FOU NTAIN BRUSH.
APPLICATION HLED MAR. 7. 1919.

n m r w c a QAGan y ATTORNEY.
, St. Louis, State of UNITED stares PATENT orrieiz.
. cnnrs'rornnnn. GARVEY, or CLAYTON, MISSOURI.
FOUNTAIN-BRUSH.
Application filed March 7,
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER A. GAR- VEY, a citizen of the United States of America, a resident of Cla ton, in the county of issouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a fountain brush, the present improvement being intended more particularly for use in brushes used for stenciling or for other purposes in which a to and fro movement is im arted to the brush while it is in service. y improved brush includes a pendulum or swinging valve for controlling the flow of liquidfrom the brush reservoir, and a spring by which the movement of the valve is regulated during its swinging motion, thereby preventing an excess flow of liquid past the valve. The improvement also includes means for varye ing the tension of said spring with consequent variance of its action upon the valve.
Figure I is an elevation of my fountain brush. 7
Fig. II is a longitudinal section.
Fig. III is a transverse section through the reservoir of thebrush.
In the drawings I have shown my brush in a form suitable for use with marking stencils, but it will be understood that the brush may be of any suitable type other than that shown. i
The reservoir A of the brush shown is intended to serve also as ahandle, and it has fitted to its lower end a discharge device B to which the contents of the reservoir may be delivered to pass to the brush tip C attached to the dischar e device: The reservoir A, the brush tip and the discharge device B, in so far as their general features are con-' cerned, may be of any desired configuration or form.
At the end of the discharge device to which the reservoir A is attached is a neck 1 fitted within the reservoir, and preferably provided with an external screw thread fitted to an internal screw thread in the reservoir. The neck 1 is screw threaded internally, as seen at 2. Said internal screw Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1920.
and a pendent stem 7 of smaller diameter than the diameter of the orifice, the stem depending into the discharge device and being provided with a weighted lower end 8, preferably produced by making the lower portion of the stem of greater diameter than the portion of the stem intermediate of said weighted lower end 8 and the valve head 6.
Between the head 6 of the valve device D and the adjusting screw 3 is a spring 9, which may normally serve to hold the valve device so that the valve head is in contact with its seat around the orifice 5, and which acts to govern the movement of said valve device, so that when the valve head is tilted from its seat on the web 4 it will be returned to its seat and will also be prevented from excessive movement due to to and fro movement of the brush in use.
In the practical use of my brush it is moved to and fro, and during such to and fro movement the pendulum or swinging valve device D vibrates so thatv the valve head 6 is first tilted in one direction and then in the opposite direction to permit flow of liquid through the discharge orifice 5. The spring 9 constantly tends to limit the degree to which the valve is tilted, and the tension of this spring may be regulated at will by adjusting the adjusting screw 3. Therefore any desired speed of flowof liquid past the valve head 6 may be acquired, and the desired definite rate of flow will be obtained during the use of the brush, for the reason that the valve device will partake of only a given swinging motion in accordance with the intended control.
I claim:
In a fountain brush, a reservoir, a discharge device secured to one end of said reservoir, said discharge device having a valve seat member therein provided with a discharge orifice andhaving a neck extending from said valve seat member, an adjusting screw movable in said neck a pendulum valve device suspended from said valve seat member at the location of said discharge orifice, and a spring interposed between said valve device and said adjusting screw. 10
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto afiiX my signature.
CHRISTOPHER A. GARVEY.
