l FOUNTAIN BRUSH Filedv May 25 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE 2,051,340 FOUNTAIN BRUSH Hazen George Lomas, Detroit, Mich.
1 Claim.
A vstill further important object of the inveny tion isto provide a fountain brush which is cheap to manufacture, clean, sanitary and economical use. Afs'tillevery important object of the invention is to/prcvldc means for regulating the ow of cream: oriuid from the bulb and means for distributingthe fluid throughout the hair of the brusligj/l Another importantobject of the invention will be found to reside in the meansprovided for preventing the ow of iiuid from the brush, to the end that the brush may be packed away in a suitcase, trunk or the like, for traveling purposes.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, wherein like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the same, Figure l. is a front elevational view partly in section of the fountain brush, showing it in its assembled position,
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view of Fig-- ure 1, taken on line t-2 thereof, looking in the direction of the arrows,
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the fountain brush, showing the bulb removed from the brush head, and
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of the soap feeding mechanism.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral t gen-s erally designates the brush head which is of cylindrical shape, having a central bore, the lower end being bent inwardly as clearly illustrated in Figure l, and the inner upper portion being internally threaded. Within the brush head S there is secured a disk 8 having a centrally disposed bore therein, through which there extends the feed pipe 9. As clearly illustrated in Figure l, the central portion of the disk 8 is provided on its upper surface with a cone-shaped projection, the inner sides of which closely embrace the feeding tube Si, which is welded thereto.
The disk 8 is centrally located and secured in the bore of the brush head 6, dividing the brush head into a lower bristle receiving portion l,`in which there is rmly secured in the usual manner, the hair or' shaving bristles I2. The feed pipe 9 projects above the disk 8 and extends be- 'any desired position lrelative Application May 25, 1934, Serial No. 727,539
low the disk, to substantially the central portion of the bristle; I2.
It is to be fiu'ther noted in this connection that the hair bristles I2 completely ll the lower cavity ofthe brush head and snugly embrace and 5 surround the'outer surface of the feed pipe 9. I'o the lower portion of the feed pipe 9 there is secured a rubber tubing I4 which terminates short, as illustrated in Figure 1 of the lower ends of the hair bristles I2 and the lower free end of l0 the tubing I4 is serrated or toothed for a purpose to be more fully hereinafter Idescribed.
Iny the feed pipe 9 directly above the apex of theprojecting portion of the disk 8 there is provided oppositely disposed inlet ports' or apertures 15 i6. The upper portion of the feed pipe 9 is internally threaded into which there is adapted to be screwed a thumb screw or valve I8 which may be regulated with respect to the inlet ports I6, to the end that the ow of liquid may be controlled, 20 or if so desired, completely stopped.-
In the upper portion ofthe brush head E there is internally threaded a bulb supporting collar 20 having a centrally disposed bore therein which communicates with the inner upper portion' of 25A the brush head defining a soap well, 2l.
As clearly illustrated in Figure l, the lower portion of the bulb 22 fits over the circular upper portion of `the collar 20, closely embracing the same and securing the bulb thereto. The upper 30 portion of the rubber bulb is of substantially v frusto-conical shape and is constructed of such a size, as to adequately accommodate a supply of fluid, such as soap to last over a reasonable period of time.
On the outer surface of the bulb there is provided integral, spaced. longitudinally disposed ribs 2t providing a gripping surface to facilitate the squeezing vand unscrewing of the bulb. It is also to be noted that the upper portion of the bulb 22 is substantially flat to the end that the same whether lled with soap or empty, can be positioned in an upright position.
The thumb screw valve i8 may be adjusted to to the inlet ports to regulate the flow of soap through the inlet port i@ into the feed pipe Sand consequently to the brush hairs i2. It is noted in this connection that when it is desired to place the l'fountain brush in a trunk, suitcase, or the like, in traveling, the thumb screw valve I8 may be moved` to its lowermost position, closing the inlet ports I6 1 and thereby preventing the ow of fluid through the feed pipe 9.
The depending tubing I4 secured to the feed 55 to present a.v sharp, soft pointed surface of substantially the same character as the brush hairs, to the end that a pleasing effect to the face is obtained. This rubber tubing secured to the feed vpipe or tube, is considered one of the salient features of theinvention, in that it terminates just short of the free end of the brush head, thereby permitting of a distribution of the soap in that portion of the brush hair which contacts the surface ofthe user.
While there is shown for the purpose of illustration a. preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to bespecificaily understood that it is capable of various changes and modifications, without .departing from the spirit thereof, and it is intended therefore, that only sueh limitations shall be imposed thereon as are indicated in the prior art or the appended claim.
Having thus described the' invention, what is A brush of the class described, comprising a head having a centrally arranged passageway therethrough and an internally threaded upper portion, a transversely disposed disk in said passage dividing said head inlto an upper fluid well` and a lower bristle receiving portion, said disk having an upwardly extending integral frustoconical shaped central portion with a longitudinally extending bore therein, bristles secured in said lower portion, a longitudinally disposed fee/i pipe in said bore in said disk projecting into the fluid well and extending into the bristles, said portion of said feed pipe in the uid well being provided with fluid inlet ports adjacent the upper portion of the frusta-conical-shaped portion, a tubing ofsoft rubber material secured to the lower end of said feed pipe and terminating shortof the lowermost end of said bristles, said feed pipe on the free end thereof being serrated,
an adjustable valve for said ports, and a frusto-` conical shaped fluid receiving bulb secured to the upper portion of said brush head.
