Be it known that 1, CARL Sonn, a citizen of Hungary, residing at Ussining, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Heels, of which 'the following is a complete specification.

rlhis invention relates generally to im provenienteJ in heels for shoes and more particularly to rubber heels therefor.

ln the construction of heels now in general use, it has been observed that the extreme rear edges wear away ver i quickly, requiring the wiole heel to be discarded notwithstanding the fact that the major portion. of the same is practically unharmed. lt is therefore one of the principal objects tie present invention to obviate this unnecessary waste by providing a heel structure comprising two sections, one of which is permanently secured to the shoe and the other detachably associated therewith.

another object of the invention is to provide means constituting a part of each of the heel sections 'for securing the saine in place, said means being adapted to snugly interlit to prevent accidental displacement of the detachable section.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of coacting securing means formed on each section which eliminates the use of nails, screws or other fastening elements that would necessarily require the employment of skilled labor to attach.

With these and other objects in view which will be more apparent from the following description and claims, reference is made to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Figure 1 isa perspective View' of the improved heel in its applied position.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail perspective views of the several elements constituting a part of the invention.

Fig. 6 isa sectional view of a modification.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates a portion of a shoe having the usual sole 11 and one or more lifts 12, to the bottom of which is adapted to be fitted a heel comprising respectively a permanent section and a detachable section, the former section as shown in the preferred form, including a plate 13, preferably constructed of aluminum or fiber. The rearwardly extending overhanging portion 13a of said .plate is 60 provided with a depending flange 14 adj acent one rear outer edge thereof and a transverse tongue or rib 15, preferably of T shaped construction in cross section is connected at one end with the medial portion of the flange 14 and terminates at its opposite end slightly within the outer contour of the plate, which is cut away and beveled as at 16, at this point. The rear extremity of the plate is cut away and beveled as at 17 for a purpose to be hereafter set forth. The portion 13)1 is apertured at 18 for the reception of a fastening element 19, driven therethrough into the lift 12 and sole 11, for retaining the said portion in position. The plate and the permanent section 21 are provided with alined apertures 20 for the reception of fastening elements 23 which are passed therethrough and driven into the sole 11 and lift 12. The rear wall of the 80 section 21 is reversely beveled as at 22 and 23, the latter, being adapted to accommodate and lit the forward beveled portionA 24; of the rib 14. The detachable rear heel sec* tion 25 is beveled as at 26 to register with 85 and engage the beveled portion 22 of the front section and the upper face of said detachable sectionis provided with a flange 27 beveled at 28 and 29 to respectively register with the beveled portions 16 and 17 of 90 the plate 13 when said detachable section isl positioned thereon. The front wall of the flange 27 is beveled as Vat 30 to register with the beveled portion 23 of the permanent section 27 and the upper face of the section 95 25 is provided with parallel transversely extending ribs 31, preferably T-shaped in cross lsection and formed integral with said heel section and its rib 27, to constitute a T-shaped groove 32. The upper faces of the ribs 31 are below the horizontal plane of the upper face of the flange 27 approximately a distance equal to the width of the plate 13 in order that the complete heel when assembled will closely interfit to present flush surfaces on all of the exposed sides. In applying the detachable section 25, the free ends of the ribs 31 and rib 15 are engaged and the section 25 slid transversely thereon until the free ends of the 2l in order to reduce the number of'separate;

the structure and relation of parts are practically identical with the preferred form a description of this modilication, in detail, has been omitted. Vhile the heel is primarily designed to be made of rubber, it is understood that any otherl material may be employed but in instances where rubber is the material used, the gripping action of the ribs 31 with the rib l5 due totheir inherent elasticity will be suliicient to retain the detachable section in place and said gripping action will be further augmented by the tendency of the ribs to llatten out and spread under the weight of the wearer.

lVhile there has been illustrated and shown several preferred embodiments of the invention, it is understood that the same are merely illustrative of a few of the ways in which the invention may be reduced' to practice and such changes and alterations as fall within thescope of the appended claims may be resorted to when expedient.

Vhat is claimed as newis:

l. A Atread lift comprising a permanent section adapted to be secured to vthe heel portion of a shoe and having a rearwardly extending overhanging portion provided with `a transverse tongue having outwardly extending flanges, and a detachable section adapted to be removably secured to the rear portion thereof, said detachable section having transverse parallel ribs each provided with outwardly extending flanges constituting a receiving and retaining groove for the reception of the tongue, and marginal flanges formed respectively on the plate andv said detachable section on the opposite side edges thereof to provide abutments respec tively for the` unobstructed ends of the tongue and ribs.

2. A tread lift including permanent and detachable sections, means for removably associating the same comprising an extension from the permanent section adapted to over-lie the detachable section, the said eX- tension and detachable section beingprovided respectively with a laterally mating T-shaped rib and groove, each having at an opposite end a longitudinal marginal flange obstructing the same and constituting an abutment for the unobstructed end to prevent lateral displacement of the detachable section in one direction.

3. A tread lift including a permanent front section and a detachable rear section, means for associating said sections comprising, an extension from said front section adapted to overlie the rear section and provided with a beveled side and end wall respectively and a marginal lla-nge depending from the opposite side wall, a transverse T-shaped rib depending from said extension, obstructed at one of its ends by said marginal flange, an upstanding side and rear marginal flange on the rear section hav-- ing beveled portions adapted to respectively engage the beveled side and. end walls of the extension and a pair of spaced transverse vT-sbaped ribs obstructed at the end opposite to the obstructed end of the rib of the other section, and adapted to embrace the rib on said extension.

4. A tread lift structure including a permanent front section and a detachable rear section, means for associating said sections comprising, an over-hanging extension projecting rearwardly from the front section, and provided with upwardly and inwardly beveled end and side walls respectively, a transversely disposed T-shaped rib depend ing therefrom and open at the beveled side thereof, a longitudinally disposed marginal flange depending from sain extension, closing the opposite end of said rib and extending from the body of the front section to the end wall of the extension, spaced transversely disposed T-shaped ribs upstanding from the upper surface of the rear section adapted to engage the rib of the over hang.
