My invention relates'- to a detachable heel for shoes and-,boots and more particularly to fastening means for detachably'securing a heel section, such as rubber or leather, 5 to a stationar heel section which is secured to the eel'portion of the shoe or boot, and it is a distinct and practical improvement to overcome certain practical objections to, and defects in, the present l method of securing, especially rubber heels, o}1;\tread'sections to the heel ofthe boot or s oe.
A further object of my invention is the rovision of novel means for locking the etachable heel section to the stationary heel section of a shoe or boot.
A still further object of the `invention'is to provide a detachable heel section and fastening means therefor which will' be 29 simple in construction, durable, easily and quickly attached and detached from the stationary heel sectionof a shoe or boot and prove highly eicient for the purpose intended. 4 25 A still further object of the invention is the provisin of means which will permit of a rubber heel being securely applied to an aluminum heel, which has proven a failure heretofore. l

Referring to the drawings, the reference character 1 indicates a heel portion ofa shoel or boot and 2 represents the stationaryheel section'thereof, which may be made pfrom leather, metal, or composition and of any desired shape orl height, and which is prof vided in its front face with a suitable recess 3. Driven into the stationary heel section from e lower face thereof,V or" otherwise suitably fastened thereto are, a plurality, preferably two suitably spaced U-shaped staples .or similar fastening elements 4. The detachale heel section is provided. with a metallic reinforcing plate 8 which is embedded or anchored in the rubber 'heel section 6 which also serves to form' the up' r face or roof of the socket This plate is provided with faucher openings 9 whenl 10 vulcanized in thedetachable heel section 6 so that they may be filled with rubber for se curely holding the plate from displacement. When applied to leather, Wooden or composition heels, the plate is preferably nailed or otherwise suitably fastened in position The plate 8 is further provided with a pair of transversely disposed slotted openings 10, as shown in Figs. 4 and 12.
The upper face of the detachable heel section 6 is provided With a pair of slotted openings 11 which register With the slotted openings in the plate 8 Which latter openings communicate With the pocket or socket 7, as shown in Fig. 8 and these slotted openings are so positioned as to register with and permit the passage of the U-shaped fastening elements' 4 of the stationary heel section 2 therethroughvwhen the detachable heel section is applied to the stationary heel section 2 of the shoe or boot. The detachable heel section 6 is further provided with the -U-shaped recesses 12 which receive the U-shaped fastening elements 4, as is evident from Figs. 2, 3 and. 9. The recesses 12 lie below the plane of thelower face of the socket 7- and backy from the plane of the side faces of the socket 7.
13 indicates a suitablev locking plate or tongue which is insertable into the socket 7 of the detachable heel section/6 when this heel section is applied to` the stationary heel section 2. The locking plate 13 also passes through the loops or sockets formed by 'the staple fastening means 4 and securely fastens the detachable heel section against displacement upon the stationary heel section 2, as will be apparent from the draw* lngs.
The reinforceing plate 8 is further provided With a suitably shaped resilient protuberance 14 near one end for locking engagement in the opening 15' of the locking plate or tongue 13 When the latter is driven home in the socket 6 to -prevent accidental removal of the lockingplate or tongue 13 from'its. locked position for holding the detachable heel section 6 ,upon the stantionary heel section 2, asis manifest. The reinforcing plate 8 is further .provided at one end with a recess 16 which is adapted to register with the recess 3 in the front face of the stationary heel section v2 to permit the'easy and quick insertion of a hook end 17 of a button hook or like element 18 to engage in the opening 19v of the locking plate or tongue 13 for removing or extracting the plate ortonguesl?, from its socket 6 when in its locked position to permit the heel section 6 being quickly detached from the station-- ary heel section 2 of the boot or shoe Without even having to remove the boot or shoe from the foot, if desired, for the replacing of a new detachable i heel section 6 after the same has become Worn upon its tread surface.
From the modification shown in Figs. 10, 11 and 12, it is vevident that a detachable rubber or other heel tread section 6 may be applied to aluminumyheels lfor ladies shoes, designated 20, as conveniently as to any other make or type of heel thus providing a tread section for aluminum heels which will not be subject to falling ofi' or being easily displaced which is the trouble now experienced with the tread lifts of aluminum heels for ladies shoes. When the detachable heel section 13 is applied to aluminum heels for ladies shoes, designated 20 in Fig. 11, the U-shaped fastening elements are cast in the lower face of the heel, asV shown in Fig. 11. The detachable tread' section 13, as shown in Fig. 12, is made to conform'to the size and shape of the lower face of the aluminum heel, as is manifest.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that `I provide a detachable heel or tread section for any type of shoe or boot heel which is simple in construction, effectively locked in position, easily and quickly detached and which will in every respect, prove highly eflicient for the purpose intended. f
The. many advantages of the invention herein described Will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains. y I do not Wish tobe understood as having limited myself to the exact details of construction shown and described, but desire to have itunderstood that the invention I have shown in the drawings is merely illustrative, as it is manifest that various minor changes may be made in the exact construction and particular arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I reserve the right to make any such changes, or modifications, as may fairly fall Within the scope of the appended: claimwhen fairly construed.
