Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
THoMAs sHAw, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
' IMPROVE-MENTIN PLANlNG-MACHINES.
,. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,941, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs SHAW, of the city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Planer-Bar, and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hadtothe accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in the employment of a bar in the manner and for the purpose as hereafter described. The object of the invention is to enableordinary planing-machines to reach through work, and perform operations similar to shaping or slotting machines.
In order to enable others to use and practice my invention, I will proceed to describe itsconstruction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawing,
whichforms part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of section of an ordinary planer with the invention attached, and Fig. 2 is an end view of planer-bar.
a, Fig. 1, is the ordinary planer-bed, upon Which the Work is bolted. bis the side braces that support the ordinary tool-carriage g. c is the planer-bar, supported upon clamp-boxf, andis forked and pivoted at its back end, as
shown at d, to cross-bar e, and is provided on its outer end with a cutting-tool, k. The
socket i is secured in the desired position by the ordinary tool-post l, and is screwed at its lower end into yoke I1, said" yoke being piv oted', as shown in Fig. 2, to clamp-boxf. The cross-bar e is pivoted on its outer ends to body of planer by means of center-bolts run through sides of braces b, all for the purpose as hereafter described.
It will be observed that the bar '0 has, at
its outer end, all the vertical and horizontal movement that the feed-carriage g is susceptible of and that the feed of planer will operate this bar; and that, by reason of the bars projecting length it is capable of reaching through work equal to one-third the length of planer bed; and that, by reason of the endthrust character of the bar-forcing cuttingtool, it is capable of taking a cut equal to full capacity of planer all of which are great and valuable features and additions to the planingmachine.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-- The combination, as herein described, of the planer-bar 0 with the planing-machine.
THOMAS SHAW.
