To all whom tmay concern:
Be it known that I, SAM EL T. MULFORD, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Safety-Clip Devices for WVindows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety devices to prevent the raising of a window sash. The object of the invention is to provide a safety device of the nature referred to which is simple in construction, capable of being easily and'quickly applied for use,-
economical to manufacture, and efficient in operation. I
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relative arrangement .of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawing and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view in perspective, parts broken off, and parts broken out, showing a safety clip device embodying my invention applied to prevent the lower sash of a window from being raised in the window frame.

Referring to the drawing, reference numeral 5 designates a window frame which may be .of the usual or ordinary construction adapted to receive'the upper and lower window sashes 6, 7, in the usual manner and in-which said sashes may be raised and lowered and 8 designates the usual sash cord for the lower sash.
' Experience has shown that unauthorized entry into houses, buildings, or the like, by burglars and others is frequently effected by jimmying the windows, that-1s, by either tampering with the ordinary sash 'lQCkS usually applied to fasten windows or by forcing the same loose by inserting a jimmy or bar underneath the bottom of the lower sash and forcing such sash upwardly in its guides in the window frame. T he sash locks ordinarily supplied to window sashes are not usually constructed :in such a manner as to be capable of resisting the force or pressure applied in jimmying the sash, and some times they are of such'construction as to permit the easy insertion of suitable tools between the two sashes of the window for cutting or otherwise releasing these fastening devices.
It is among the special purposes of my present invention to provide a safety clip device of simple construction and which is economical to manufacture, for insertion .between the edge of the lower sash .and the adjacent surface of the frame in whiih the sash is mounted to slide, or between the abutting faces of the two sashes of the window, the clip being so constructed as to bite into the surface of the Window'frame in the one case, or into the surface of the ad jacent window sash in the other case, or to otherwise form an engagement, such as to prevent the form of a jimmy fromeffecting the raising of the lower sash or, in the other instance referredto, the lowering of the upper sash; In Fig. 3 I have shown a form 7 of safety clip ,device embodying my invention. This form is made of a sheet metal stamping 9 which is slit longitudinally part way of its length in two parallel lines, as indicated at 10, 11, thus forming three tongues 12, 13 and 1 1. The outer tongues 12, 14;, are then bent over laterally with respect to the plane of the stamping'fi) in one direction, while the intermediate tongue 13 is bent ordeflected slightly in the other direction and the free edge of said tongue 13 is preferably beveled off or sharpened,as indicated at 15.
In the use of a safety clip such as above described, the body of the stamping 9 is inserted, for example, between the edge of the lower sash 7, and the .wall of the groove or guideway in the window frame 5, in which said sash slides, with the tongues 12, 1 1, bent over upon the window sash and the tongue 13 bent over toward the adjacent wall surface of the window frame with the sharpened edge 15 thereof in engagingcontact with such surface. By reason of the engagement of the tongues 12, 14, over the upper edge of the sash, any attempt to raise said sash in its guideways will cause the sharpened edge 15 of tongue 13 to bite into the surface of the channel or guideway in the casing and hence prevent said sash from being raised. The greater the power applied to the lower sash to raise it, the deeper and greater will the sharpened edge 15 of the tongue 13 bite into the casing, thereby efficiently resisting the raising of the sash.
Instead of the safety clip, constructed as above described, being inserted between the edge of the sash and the adjacent surface of the casing, it may be inserted between the two, sashes of the window as shown in Fig. 2. In this case the bent-over tongues 12, 14, engage over the upper surface or member of the lower sash, while the beveled tongue 13 presents toward and its sharpened edge 15*engages withthe adjacent surface of the upper sash 6. In this'case any attempt either to raise the lower sash or to lower the upper sash will cause the sharpened edge 15 to bite into the surface of the upper sash and hence resist such movements of the sashes.
Should it be desired to avoid the marring effect of the sharpened edge 15 biting into the surface of the casing or of the upper sash, the advantages of my invention may be attained by applying a rack lfl to the surface to be engaged by the intermediate tongue of the clip device as shown in Fig. 4.
It may also be desirable to provide means by which the engagement of the intermediate tongue'with the adjacent surface of the window casing or the upper sash, as in Figs. 1 and 2, or with the rack 16, as in Fig. 4, may be detached, as for example, when it is desired-to remove the safety device to permit the sashes to be operated in the ordinary manner. ,To accomplish this result in ac cordance with my invention a central tongue may be made of somewhatextended length as indicated at 17, Fig. A, whereby its natural flexibility or resiliency will permit the engaging edge surface or end thereof to be withdrawn from engaging relation. To facilitatethe necessary slight upward bending of the tongue 17 to secure this result, a lip 18 may be stamped out of the tongue 17 to afford means to be grasped by thechand or thumb, and by which the tongue may be deflected outwardly sufiiciently to disengage its biting edge and permit the clip to be removed; 7
Having now set forth the objects and nature of 'my invention and a construction embodying the principles'thereof, and having explained its application in various relations, what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A safety clip device consisting of a sheet metal stamping, slitted longitudinally for a portion of its length, from one end thereof, to form, integral tongues, said tongues being bent or deflected in opposite directions from the plane of the body of the stamping.

A safety clip device consisting of a sheet metal stamping, slitted longitudinally for a portion of its length, from one end thereof, to form integral tongues, said tongues being bent or deflected in opposite directions from the plane of the body of the stamping, the free end of onevof said tongues being sharpened. n

A safetyclip device for window sashes consisting of a sheet metal stamping having longitudinal slits extending part way the length thereof from one end and in parallel lines to form'integral tongues, the outermost tongues being bent or deflected in one direction and-the intermediate tongue be: ing bent or deflected in the opposite direction from the plane of the body of the stamping. 4. A safety clip device for window sashes consisting of a sheet metal stamping having longitudinal slits extending part way the length thereof from oneend and in parallel lines to form integral tongues, the outermost tongues being bent or deflected in one direction and the intermediate tongue being bent or-deflected incthe opposite direction from the plane of the body of the stamping, the free edge of said intermediate tongue being sharpened.
5. A safety clip device for window sashes consisting of a sheetmetal stamping having longitudinal slits extending part way the length thereof from one end and in parallel lines to form integral tongues,the outermost tongues being bentor deflected in one direction and the intermediate tongue being bent or deflected in the opposite direction from the plane of the body of the stamping, the free edge of said intermediate tongue being sharpened, in combination with a rack with which the free end of one of said tongues engages.
