JOSEPH MASTALERZ, OF MLJAUKEE, WESCONSIN, ASSIGNOR 0F CNE-HALE TO TOFEAL SAWICKI, Ol MILWAUKEE, VJIS-CONSIN.
Application sie@ April 14.,
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, Josnrrr Mas'rnnnnz, a citizen of Poland, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Curtain and Shade Brackets, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specifica.- tion.
The invention relates to curtain and shade holders.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide curtain and shade holders which may be easily and quickly applied to the window casings and be adaptable for windows of different widths.
A further object of the invention is to provide a curtain and shade holder device which may be economically made up of sheet metal stampings.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation view of the devices embodying the invention, showing their application to the window; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of one of the devices, parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; 5 is a section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is an elevation view of a modified form of holder; Fig. 7 is a section taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a section taken on the line 8--8 of Fig. 6.
The holders are made in pairs, a right and a left foreach window. Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive show holders designed to be secured to the sides of the window casing, while Figs. 6 to 8 show a holder designed to be secured to the top portion of the window casing.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, each holder consists of clamping members or plates 9 and 10 which form a base or support for the arms which carry the shades and curtain rolls or rods.
The member 9 consists of a sheet metal stamping having a fiat base portion 12, flanged sides 13 and ears 14 having U-shaped ends 15 to receive a pin 16. A slot 17 is formed in the base portion 12 of the mem- Speccation of Letters Patent.

192e. semi No. 373,952.
ber 9. IThe member 9 also has a flanged end portion 18 having a toothed edge to engage the window casing.
The member 10 is slidably mounted in guideways formed between the flanges 13 and base portion 12 of the member 9 and has a flanged end 19 provided with a toothed edge similar to the end 18 of the member 9. A longitudinally extending slot 2O is formed in this member together with a series of transverse slots 21 which are struck up from the flat body portion of this member.
rlhe curtain rod support is formed by a U-shaped piece lof metal 22 having its ends mounted on the pin 16 between the ears 14 and provided with hooks 23 and 24, which may be stamped out of the member 22 itself or which may be secured to said member, and as shown the hook 23 is stamped out of the member while the hook 24 is secured to the member.
To lock the two plates 9 and 10 together in firm clamping engagement with the window casing a lever 25 is pivotally mounted on the pin 16 between the sides of the member 22 and carries a pin 26 upon which a hook 27 is pivotally mounted, said hook being thus eccentrically pivoted with respect to the lever 25 and engageable in any one of the slots 21 in the member 10 so that after a preliminary adjustment of the two members 9 and 1() against the sides of the window casing is secured, the insertion of the hook in the nearest opening 21 presented to it and the drawing down of the lever 25 from vertical to a horizontal position causes the two members 9 and 10 to be drawn tightly toward each other and into clamping engagement with the sides of the window casing, at which time said members will be locked together due to the position of the hook 27 with respect to the pins 26 and 16, which prevents any chance of its upward movement and release from its engagement with the member 10.
To provide for using shade rolls of different lengths, shade holder brackets 28, which are of stamped sheet metal construction, are each provided with slots 29 alining with the slots 2O in the member 10 and are secured in adjusted position by a cam lock or clamp consisting of a clamping plate 30 with its base portion slidably mounted upon the bottom of the member 10 within the slot 17 and having an eyed portion 31 projecting through the slots 2O and 29 and carrying a pin 32 upon which a cam locking lever 33 is mounted so that when said lever is swung in wardly the shade holder' member will be securely clamped against the member l0 by the relative movement of the cam lever 33 with respect to the base portion 30, which movement binds the member l0 and bracket 2S between said lever and the plate 30. The brackets 28 have inwardly extending arms upon which the shade roller is carried in the usual manner so that it may be readily connected or disconnected therefrom.
ln the construction shown in Figs. 6 to S inclusive, each holder consists of a pair of clamping plates 35 and 36, similar to the plates 9 and 10.
The plate 35 has flanges 37 and a base portion 37 and a flanged end portion 38V provided with a toothed edge. This plate is also provided with side extensions 39 and 40, having ends 39 and 4l bent at right angles thereto to take the curtain rod and shade holder respectively, the end 40 having rod receiving grooves 42 therein and the end 41 having the usual opening 43 to receive the shade roller.
The plate 3G is slidably mounted in guideways formed between the llanges 37 and the base portion 37, and has a flanged end 44 provided with a toothed edge. This plate isprovided with a series of transverse slots 45 struck up .trom the body portion ot the plate to coperate with a locking hook 46.
The plate 35 has U-shaped ears 47 in which a pin 48 is mounted and a clamping lever 49 is pivotally mounted on said pin between said earsand carries an eccentric pin 50 upon which the hook 46 is pivotally mounted.
The hook 4G is engageable in any one of the slots 45 in the member 36 and being ecoentrically pivoted with respect to the turning axis of the lever 49 said hook serves to draw the plates together to bring the toothed portions into clamping engagement with the sides ofthe upper portion of the window casing when the lever 49 is swung from vertical to a horizontal position, the movement ot the lever at this position bringing the pin 50 into alinement with the pin 48 and substantially alining the hook with said pins, whichV prevents any chance of movement of the hook from engagement with the plate 36. It will be noted that this arrangement Jfor drawing the plates together to clamp them to the window casing is similar to the device previously described.
lltV will also be apparent that the eXtensions 39 andV 40 instead of being integral with Vone of the clamping plates may be separate therefrom and be adjustably secured thereto, it desired. Y
From the foregoing description it will be noted that the holders are of simple construction and can be easily and quickly applied to the window casing to support the shade and the curtains in proper position, and Where the curtains are used they will conceal a greater portion of the device.
l desire it to be understood that this invention is not limited to any speciiic :term or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
iV hat l' claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A curtain and shade holder comprising a'supporting plate having side guide flanges, a casing-gripping portion, ears adjacent said gripping portion and a longitudinally extending slot, a second supporting plate slidably mounted beneath said guide flanges and having a casing-gripping portion at one end, and a rack portion at its other end, a pin mounted on said ears, a U-shaped member mounted on said pin and provided with cur- .tain rod receiving portions, a shade bracket, a clamping plate slidably mounted in said slot, a cam-looking lever carried by said clamping plate to secure the shade bracket in adjusted position, a locking lever pivotally mountedV on said pin within the side portions of said U-shaped member, and an eccentrically mounted hook on said last named locking lever engageable with the rack to draw the gripping portions of the supporting plates into clamping engagement with the window casing;
