Description

G. ELSEY.
Harness and Saddle PadsQ' Patented Feb. 11,1873.
AM. PHominwaeMPmb co. n.)f(osaomvfmocsssg) UnTTnn STATES PATENT QFFICE.
GEORGE ELSEY, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS AND SADDLE PADS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,790, dated February 1], 1572 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO. ELsEY, of Sterling, in the county of WVhitesides and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Harness and Saddle Pads; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a section of my harness and saddle pad. Fig. 2 is a top view of same.
This invention has relation to harness or saddle pads; and the novelty consists in making the pad of two pieces of sheep-skin tanned with the wool on, and attached together with the wool turned inward to form the packing, as hereinafter specified.
Referring to the drawing, A A designate the'two pieces of sheep-skin, placed with the wool sides together, and secured by stitching at the edges. B designates the strips of leather to form the loop and strings of the pad. This strip is secured by stitching midway between the ends of the pad between the two pieces of sheep-skin, and serves to give form and compactness to the pad.
It will be seen at once that this pad has many advantages, being easily and cheaply made, and having'a packing which cannot be displaced or become unequal] y disposed in the pad.
I intend to coat the upper piece of sheepskin with some kind of water-proof varnish to render the pad water-proof.
I do not limit myself to the use of sheepskin alone, as other skins may be used to advantage in like manner.
Having fully described my invention, what- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A harness orsaddle pad, composed of sheepskin or its equivalent, retaining the wool or hair, and having the same turned inward to form the packing, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE ELSEY. \Vitnesses:
L. S. HOFFMAN, H. W. VVARD.
