UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OHAUNGEY B. HART, OF FAIBPORT, NEW YORK, AND GEORGE W. HART, OF MEDINA, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-POUNDERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,548, dated April 27, 1875; application led March 29, 1875.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, GHAUNGEY B. HART, of Fairport, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, and GEORGE WV. HART, of
- Medina, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Atmospheric Clothes-Tasher, of which the following is a specitication:
Figure 1 is a bottom perspective view of our improved clothes-washer. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object ot' this invention is to furnish an improved device for washing clothes by forcing the water out of them by atmospheric pressure, and then allowing them to be again saturated, and which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, washing the clothes quickly and thoroughly.
The invention consists in an improved clothes-washer, formed by the combination with each other of the disk or head provided with a handle, and with one or more downwardly-opening valves, the coiled spring, the band or ring, and the iexible connecting-band, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents a disk or head, of any convenient size, and which may be made of wood or metal, and to the outer side of which is attached a handle, B. To the under side of the head A is attached the end of a coiled spring', C. The last coil at the other end ot' the spring C is attached to a metallic ring, D. The head A and the ring D are also connected by a strip or band, E, of canvas or other suitable material, the edges of' which are attached to the edges of the said head A and ring D. In the head A are formed one, two, or more holes the lower ends of which are covered by valves F opening downward.
In using the device, it is placed upon the clothes in a tub, and the head A is forced downward by means of the handle B. This compresses the air and forces it into and through the clothes, driving out the water. As the head is raised the tendency is to form a vacuum beneath the said head A; This causes the valves F to be opened by the pressure of the atmosphere, and enables the device to be raised and again operated in the same place, or upon some other part of the clothes.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved atmospheric clothes-washer, formed by the combination with each other of the disk or head A, provided with a handle, B, and one or more downwardly opening valves, F, the coiled spring C, the band or ring D, and the iiexible connecting-band E, substantially as herein shown and described.
